A Do-335 question
« on: July 16, 2008, 06:23:42 PM »
What type of rivets do a Do-335 have? I'm making a model which is coming out realy good and I want to make it as scale as I can.
So does anyone know?

Considering that it was a low production/prototype aircraft I suspect that extra care would have been taken to fill the rivets and most of the panel lines before painting. Typically, Luftwaffe fighters had slightly sunken rivets, not raised ones.

My understanding is that some hobby kits have the rivets not flush to ease in detailing, but the real a/c had flush, or slightly sunken rivets, as did most modern metal winged a/c in WW2. Certainly a late war a/c made by Dornier, would have had a very modern rivet design.

Looking at photos in the Monarch-Monogram Do335 book of the restored A-0 WNr 240102 shows no rivets in most places and barely visible in some other places. Panel lines are clearly seen.

Some nice scale drawings of the Do335, http://www.albentley-drawings.com/dornier_do335.htm

In all the pictures I have it looks very clean in the way of rivets one old black & white shows a few granted it is for the night fighter 2 seater.
