In a private meeting last week, according to some in attendance, Pelosi told members of her leadership team that a decision to relent on the coastal ban would amount to capitulation to Republicans and the White House.

That one sentence is a perfect example of what is broken with our political system today. Congress and the White House should be working together to solve issues this country faces, not fighting each other. Dems worrying about Repubs *winning* and vice versa......how about this....let AMERICA freakin win for a change and drop the partisan dog poopies.

I don't know if it's possible to get things added to the national ballot via a signed petition or not. Assuming it is, and it got added, I'm not to sure how the politicians could stop it other than going to court and suing. If they did that they would be committing political suicide.

They already tried that. 1.3 million people signed a petition to start off-shore drilling. Pelosi gave them nothing.

She attributes today's energy problems to a failure of the Bush administration to develop a comprehensive approach, its ties to the industry and a mishandling of the economy.

What an idiot!
"We can't give in...it will make Bush look good!

And this is the same idiot that's now saying we should have another stimulus package.
"Hey that last stimulus package made Bush's ratings go up, we should do that too!"

What a waste of air this woman is.

What you are describing would require a Democracy.  We don't live in a Democracy, we live in a Representive Republic.  We vote in people to do our bidding for us.  If we don't like the way they do things, we vote them out next time.  It seems the framers didn't quite trust us enough to give us full control of the reigns.  What you want (to directly vote on issues) would require an ammendment to the Constitution.  Good luck with that.

Her own people she represents out West need to apply some pressure on her.

Let's stop sending the Middle East billions of dollars when our own country has resources.  Combined with conservation, new technologies and our own supplies...!

Nothing will be accomplished until after the elections.......on most everything. It`s political eBay.
Democracy is two wolves deciding on what to eat. Freedom is a well armed sheep protesting the vote.

This is what gets me.  Bush and the Republicans have proposed energy pland after plan.  And what has this liberal, botox injected, plastic bi&*% proposed.  Absolutely nothing!!!!!!   Where is her energy plan????   If you are going to keep denying someones plan for two freaking years, you had better come up with one of your own.

Even though sorely misguided and downright stupid at least the democrats are standing for something. Unlike the protection of privacy they ranted and fumed about for so long yet do nothing about except to pass more laws infringing upon that privacy when the power is in their hands. Is it any wonder Congress suffers an all time low approval rating?
