Damn movie was about 1/3 too long.

"Kee-rist, get it over with..." Joker was good - but some are talking about a posthumous Oscar down here. Ledger's Joker is good, but it's no "I'm mad as hell, and I'm not gonna TAKE it anymore!"

I'd have to agree with this.  There were 3-4 solid times when I thought the movie was over, and then it just built back up.

I'd love to see a good Catwoman again.  Pfeifer did an amazing job.  Halle Barry did not.  The Catwoman should not be some sort of chaotic good woman.  She should be evil / crazed.

Catwoman was a thief and burglar, not a killer, and the only psychotic version I remember is Pfeifer's in Batman Returns. She was NOT evil. In the comics she refused to join Bane after he crippled Batman and from the very beginning of the character she seemed intended as Batman's primary love interest (focusing on this angle I think could work as a minor subplot in the Nolan series).

So yes, laser, Catwoman IS "Chaotic Good."

However I will agree with you that Halle Berry's "performance" should be buried and never, ever spoken of again.

There are plenty of Villians that Depp could play...

Black Mask

Calendar Man

Catman (would make a nice tie-in with Catwoman)

Clayface

Deadshot

The Mad Hatter (I could really see Depp in this role)

Scarface

The list goes on and on... Johnny Depp excells in playing quirky characters and this series is full of them.

What about the Penguin?

Too bad this movie didn't happen sooner.  The guys doing the watchmen probably could have gotten away with a rendering closer to the book.
Hrm? What do you mean?

I read it a long time ago and don't remember the story, but I do recall the awesome characters and atmosphere, and got very excited by the trailer. If it stays faithful this will be fantastic, but Hollywood is terrified of staying faithful to anything... God forbid they follow the story Tolkien wrote. It's not like he's hailed as one of the finest authors of modern times or anything.

Good choice of music in the Watchmen trailer, as well:

They've already said there's no plans to use the Penguin. At least not as a major villain.

Engine, in addition to the usual Hollywood wrist wringing (e.g. telegraphing major plot points rather than show the viewer the clues and letting him put it together, or avoiding open endedness or endings up for interpretations, which the watchmen definitely has a ton of and relies on), they've cut the pirate comic sidestory that's central to the plot and to giving the plot one more perspective to reflect off of, they said they've changed the ending (too gory? too un-PC?), and even the director is protesting the cuts being made to the film.

Nolan probably got freedom to push this second batman movie as far as he wanted because with the first one he showed he could successfuly pull off the darker, more adult rendering.  Not only does the Watchmen director seem likely to stray from the original comic at least a little by his own personal style like the Transformers director did (tho Snyder said he's inspiring/basing himself on some short film which Alan Moore helped make, details in the Watchmen movie wikipedia article) as you can see in the trailer, but there's also some things that leave very little room for error and that I reckon they're going to screw up....  E.g. the watchmen characters aren't up to artistic license as books' characters are, or as comic characters such as Batman which have been done lots of different ways by different authors/artists.  The comedian character is nowhere near buff enough in the movie even though it's an essential part of his personality, and personality, psychology, etc are one of the top few things that made it such a great story.

Details like that, on top of all the classic "traduttore traditore" false notes in book/comic>movie adaptations, and on top of that the general Hollywood risk aversion in making a really authentic movie if it risks being too rude and violent...  I think the watchmen movie would have benefited from seeing this latest Dark Knight movie clear the way for another movie in the same line of uncompromising story and illustration...

I hope that's not too rambling a post, but at some point in quality of story telling and demonstrative art, it's as good and valuable to culture (and personaly) as any other major piece of art.. And the watchmen comics were that good.  It ought to be done justice to.  Looking at what they did to Vendetta....  It'd be a shame to pass up an opportunity to make a movie that doesn't take viewers for idiots and also kicks bellybutton visualy.  It could be one of those movies you can watch and still find really great 10-20 years later.  Like 2001, etc.

I'll see it at the cinema just because it looks like it will be epic but nothing beats a serious home-cinema system.

Even a regular DVD through a quality LCD tv is much sharper than a cinema screen.

Not to mention the fact that the beer fridge is within 5 meters, the seats are more comfortable and the food is of higher quality and not grossly overpriced.  :aok

I look forward to buying it on DVD or Blu-ray and watching it at home!  :D

Are we talking good old fashion film reels or digital projectors?  We have two competing theaters in town.  One has some digital projectors and the other doesn't.  If you've never seen a movie with the new projectors, it's worth it.  No more film grain etc.  Soooo much nicer.

I saw 300 on a digital projector and saw it again later at a budget cinema.  No comparison...

Just remembered.  The new bat suit made by Fox specifically said it could stand up to Cats.

If that's not a hint to who the next villain will be, I don't know what is.

I wouldn't mind seeing something like BATMAN vs PREDATOR if the legalities could be worked out between studios.

Per Nolan, no Robin.

And Jester, I think Robin was created way back in 1938, and debuted the next issue of DC after Batman. So, you can blame the original creators.

Batgirl would be sort of tough to do considering the age of Gordon's daughter in Dark Knight....

And I don't know what laser's continuing obsession with Catwoman as a MAIN villain is, because she's NOT. Historically she WAS more the anti-hero, even in Batman Returns which was the closest I've been able to find of her being a true hardcore villain. I can see her in a supporting role at first in conflict against but then siding WITH Batman against whoever they use for the next one, but she's NOT a heavy herself. I'd like to see her in the next one too, but in a role that actually fits the character.

Joker + crowbar+ Andy Dick as Jason Todd as Robin = WIN
as long as the poop is beaten out of him in a Brandon Lee like mishap, but with a crowbar instead of a gun.
