So do health clubs.  Hasn't stopped people from using elliptical machines.

Your first statement implies that if you have your cloths on, having gays around you shouldn't bother you. So I showed a situation where you might have to be around gays w/o your cloths on. In the military as a single person you don't often get the choice of where you will live. You are just assigned a barracks and a room number. Newer barracks have a bathroom that is shared by 2 rooms but the older ones still have gang showers similar to those found at a health club.

Hmm, I don't really get your point. Why are you so scared of gay people? I got my hair cut many times by a gay man while in the service and didn't notice any difference. He wasn't looking at me funny or anything. You guys are just too homofobic imo. Like Ack-Ack pointed out, gays have been serving your country for decades already. So why shut them out?

Who can and who cannot serve has been up to the military since its inception. There are many reasons you can get rejected for military service. I happen to agree with letting the military decide who can and who cannot serve. If the military doesn't allow gays then I am ok with that simply because military service isn't a right, it's a priviledge.

And would you be OK with it if they didn't allow blacks, Jews or Texans to join?

It's up to the military to decide who can and cannot serve.

Does everyone in Israel regardless of health issues have the *right* to serve? (just using health issues as an example)

yes, depending on how serious, a patient whos had mulitple brain surgeries no, because it would cause risk of death, but otherwise everyone may serve they just might be placed in less key positions in the army.

Interesting and I am not opposed to that. Right or wrong, that is not how it works here. There are many reasons you can get rejected for military service, being gay and health reasons are just two.

Gays have been serving in our country's armed forces and defending our country since its inception.  I don't see a problem with a gay man or woman that wants to serve and defend their country.

ack-ack

who the hell cares what they're orientation is? they're doing their country a service. if you were on a patrol somewhere, and had a choice of a gay taking out that sniper about to shoot you, or no one to take out that sniper, which would you choose? :huh

From somone who serves:

I can honestly say that THIS DOES HAPPEN:

"gay service members will immediately try to strike up romantic relationships with every man or woman within arm's reach."

When living in squadbay type envrionments it is really hard to control.  I cannot count the times that I had a new bunch of female reqruits and asked a female instructor to go walk my dorm before lights on and she found trainees in the same bunk!  I've only seen it once with the males but I see it all the time with females.

My biggest reason for not wanting to change the policy is all the added BS sensativity training we'll have to do annually and you make one little joke about a guys manhood and it automatically because an MEO issue (Military equal oppertunity)

EDIT:

And contrary to what the media reports......the US does not kick people out of the military for being gay.

I wouldn't feel very good if I was in the military and there was a gay guy in the same baracks as me or foxhole. Even in the artical is said that it doesn't help the job get done, look at the political cartoon!  :rofl

While I was in the Air Force we had a gay guy in our squadron. He lived, worked, and served with the rest of us for over three years before he came out of the closet. None of us had a clue he was gay, he ended up getting shown to the gate. He was one of the finest young NCOs I knew in my 16 years of service. Ack Ack is right, gays have been serving this country since it's inception.

and I can tell you from actual experience that those who serve and are gay have little to worry about.  If you get out of the military because you are gay it's because you WANTED OUT!

I used to be against the idea of gays serving openly in the military because I thought that there would be a negative effect on morale.  But actual experience doesn't bear this out:

Austria, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Israel, Japan, The Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, and the UK allow gays and lesbians to serve freely.  You don't hear about about any problems... there have been no reports of mass resignations, organizational collapse, or fewer enlistments due to allowing them to serve openly.

so I kind of don't care about this any more.  If it happens in the US Military, I think it would wind up being a non-issue after a little while.
