Rear view mirror or rear view pane.
« on: July 21, 2008, 02:22:44 PM »
Don't laugh. Most ww2 fighters had rear view mirrors. I assume this would be a programming nightmare, but just food for thought.

This one's been covered many times.  Do a search.
I edit a lot of my posts.  Get used to it.

It's his wish, and it doesn't hurt to bring it up again.  So ignore the search comment.

I agree they would be cool.

Not in this instance.  Hitech has stated that to do a rear view mirror would halve frame rates (it would have to render 2 point of views, rather than just one).  Besides, given screen resolutions it would be so pixelly smallilated as to be useless anyway.

So (if he'd have looked) he could have saved the time typing.

Actually, BaldEagl's reply was very appropriate.  If the OP had bothered to do a search of these very forums about having rear view mirrors in the planes that had them, he would have read why it isn't possible in the game.  That would have resulted in the OP not needing to post this wish as it would never be added to the game.

Just to add a comment that I received in correspondence with a 10 victory ace who flew P-51As, Spits, P-47s and P-51Bs - he said rear view mirrors were virtually worthless in real life combat. Others have also said that if you actually saw something in them it was too late already.

Another free sim does a half-way job of modeling rear view mirrors by displaying a sky-like image, that displays movement, but that is not the actual view aft. So it gives the illusion of being a functional mirror, but you can actually see nothing real behind you, lol.

Kinda what I was thinking. Thinking the mirror(s) would hinder vision to your high 12 o'clock. A definite negative during ACM.

Rear view mirrors only show a little bit of your six, it would just be better to just turn around and look to see if someone on you. Also, as mentioned, by the time you saw the enemy in the mirror it was already too late.

Yes, but I'd rather have that little bit of my 6 right there, instead of having to manually change positions in my corsair :]

Plus, yes, it'd be late, but evasive manuvering would still be in time, which would give you a chance.
