Simple gaffs like "all 57 states" and Iraq/Pakistan border are to be expected, and there's no reason to think them anything more than that.  Both of these examples pale in comparison to Obama's latest.  Speaking to Israeli media the other day, he was trying to convey how tough he is and will be when dealing with Iran.  He said, and I'm writing this from memory, though the audio is available:

"Don't just listen to my words; take me at my deeds. Just the other day we passed legislation out of the [Senate] Banking Committee, my committee, that puts further restrictions on Iranian investment..." (emphasis added by me)

No what's wrong with this statement? Not only is Obama not the chairman of the Senate Banking Committee, he's not even on that committee!  How does that make it "his" committee?  So to bolster his dubious claim of being tough on Iran and pro-Israel, he ether told a bold-faced lie (pathological problem, perhaps), or (and even more disturbing) doesn't even know what committees he's on.  Come to think of it, I doubt very much he's on many Senate committees and is certainly not chairing any, being that (a) it's his first term, and (b) he's spent the majority of it AWOL to run for President.

He COULD have meant it that way as in Both the borders of Iraq and Pakistan have conflict on them.....

Just a thought but I'm gearing more towards a goof up.

Did Obama visit Peurto Rico?
US Virgin Islands?

Any other US owned Territories not recognized as states?

Just curious if he meant that - not defending - just wondering....

Obama meant to say 47 or 48 and said 57 or 58 instead. McCain clearly meant Afghanistan and Pakistan, and made a mistake. Isn't it wonderful... the election season I mean?

His ability to distinguish the word 'ask' from the word 'axe' is already a big enough accomplishment. Getting the number of states down is a secondary concern.
