Astrophotography
« on: July 27, 2008, 09:57:17 PM »

I've been doing some more imaging this weekend for those that are interested...

Here is the Lagoon nebula I captured from a combination of images taken Fri and Sat night.

Modified Canon XTi, TV 102mm
160 x 1 min exposures @ ISO1600
Stacked and processed in ImagesPlus

Small 790x600(656k):

Big 1266x962(1.3mb):

Here is a Jupiter I did last weekend (12" Meade/Skynyx 2-0c):

That nebula picture is incredible.

How do you deal with hot pixels from the long exposures?

Well, with this image I didn't do anything.  I had enough light frames I didn't need to over push the contract stretch, so if there were any, they are not noticable.  The XTi has extremely low noise anyway and the images were only 1 min long.

The software I use (ImagesPlus) allows you to add dark and flat frames for calibrating a file set, but after some initial processing I decided I didn't need to do either.  I did note the air temp during those exposures.  If I was seeing hot pixels when I got home I would have put the camera out on the patio and captured some dark frames to calibrate with at close to the same temp.

Great pics, I've been meaning to get my telescope out lately since it's nice out, I've always had a fascination with anything to do with space, I got to see my first planet with it this winter during the lunar eclipse we had, saw Saturn as it was right next to the moon that night.

I bet it's an awesome feeling taking pictures like that yourself. Knowing first hand that those celestial bodies really exist like we see in pictures taken by others.   :aok
