Insurance companies
« on: July 28, 2008, 08:36:59 AM »

So, i'm driving into work this mornign, running late as usual, but unable to make time as my route keeps me on a two lane road. sittinng at a traffic light, i channel surf, and stop on 101.5. interesting station sometimes. all talk.

anyway, i stopped there as i was hearing them talking about some insurance companies in the PRNJ "offering" discounts to those who choose to have a tracking device installed in their cars. it's said it will record your speed, how hard you accelerate, how hard you brake, cruise speed, where you go, and when, and i'm sure other things as well.
they claim it is only for their use. they claim that they'll never send information from it to the police to ticket drivers for speeding. they claim that since these devices come from the factory in most GM cars now, that it's ok, and will only enhance safety.

big brother is getting closer and closer to us. the insurance company is progressive. my fear is that should this company be successful, that then the others will follow suit. they'll soon require it.

i had heard that from a friend of mine that used to drive for werner. they already use a qualcom? that senbds quite a bit of this info.
i had also read somewhere that there's sensors installed in rt 95 between NJ and one of the carolinas, that work with the gps systems installed in cars.....factory, aftermarket, your cellphone, etc. supposedly only for traffic volume and jams....but we all know there's more to it than that....sooner or later.

ooo..and for those that think if you turn your phone off, it cannot be tracked.....it can be. :noid

They claim that they'll never send the information to the police......Bull......All the police need is a sopeana(sp) to get the information. I bet they'll use it to risk rate your insurance also so they can bleed alittle more money out of the consumer.

My concern will be when they actually LIMIT the speed at which we can drive   :furious

Some trucking companies already have governors installed, wait until it applies to the average Joe.

Or even better, when the fuel crunch gets even worse, and we need to ration gasoline....regulate how FAR we are allowed to drive!!

Throughout our time there has always been someone trying to find ways to make money for nothing. Insurrance was one of them. not that it's a bad idea its just that it's set up for customers paying customers bills and whats left over goes into the companies pocket.

Anyway, this recorder is just another way to gather enough information to say it was your fault and we don't have to pay or the other guy has to pay.

well, yes and no.......it's not the insurance companies job to monitor your kids. that's your job, and you can purchase these things right now for that.

but as someone mentioned already what if you have these on all of your cars, and it comes to them limiting when/where you can drive? you decide you want to run out for a pack of smokes, or a paper, or just feel like driving for a bit? but wait....you can't, because the starter interlock won;t allow your car to start.

GONNA HIJACK MYOWN THREAD HERE.SORTa.........

i just got off the phone with my business insurance company.

i had 4 cars vandalized on my parkign lot last week. no problem i figure, i have insurance. i bought good coverage(or so i thought). so the underwriter calls me back this morning, and tells me that i have a $500.00 deductable per car. WTF???????? why the hell do i pay them for insurance then? the vandalizm was to the windshields. they were a civic, lumina, maxima, and a land rover. the only one that's probably gonna go over that deductable is the land rover.

i've only had the shop for a few months, and can't afford this chit, and the ones i was counting on, and paying them good money for it too tell me in not so many words that i'm throwing my money away.

anyone got a line on a good insurance company for auto repair shops? mine apparently sucks.....

I DO NOT have a P & C licence, but I can tell you this:

You have to realize your deductable is your choice, not your carriers's.  You decided that when you signed up for it.

Most folks don't mind a higher deductable because they get a cheaper rate.  You can easily purchase a $250 or even no deductable, but your rates will be higher for those plans.

Had you gotten in a collision with one of those vehicles and it was your fault, and the damages were, say, $3,800...that $500 deductable doesn't look so bad.

Most all of it depends on your driving record and age---and then the zipcode you live and work in...that's it.

If you want $0 deductable, then sign up for $0 deductable...understand you will pay more for it.  That's the deal no matter what company you go with--it's industry wide.

Worst case scenerio...be uninsured at any time.  If you are uninsured and it's your fault...and the car you totaled (theirs) was $25,000, and they went to the hospital--and racked up $25,000 in doctor & hospital bills and lost $15,000 being off work ...you are responsible for $65,000 they could sue for more.  You don't want to be that guy.

Good Luck, Bro

well, i thought i was buying a $250 deductable. the problem i'm having right now, is that i put in a claim with 4 cars. to me that means a 250 deductable. to them that means 250 per car, even though it's a single claim

i was told they don't offer garage owners with less than a 250 deductable.

i understand your opoint about no insurance too. i was kinda ranting, as i'm (understandably) pretty pissed off about it right now. you know...seeing as i'm gonna hafta pull the money outta my asss or something..........

had i been in business for a few years, and had a cushion built up, it wouldn't be so bad...but i'm notr even making money yet.........

thanks,,,,,,
