Property Taxes. How bad do they get ya for what you have
« on: July 28, 2008, 09:30:12 AM »

One of the pure joys of living in New Jersey is we get the privilege of having to pay some of the highest property taxes in the nation.

I have a 3 Bedroom Ranch. 1 full bath,1 half bath, Kitchen, Dining room. Living room and a small family room and 1 car attached garage, With no basement. A 12X20 Storage Shed (or outerbuilding as the township refers to it) on a property size of 120 X135'

And get nailed for $5,816.00 in property taxed this year.

And given our lovely Democrat majority state government seems to think that every time they screw up the state finances. every resident is an unending well they can simply draw from.

Pretty soon this state will have only two types of resident.
The very rich.
And the very poor.

So. how bad do you get nailed?

What exit do you live on? :D

Well, for your NJ property taxes, you get a nice freeway system and no traffic congestion, right?

We're paying about $4800/year for 4 bdrm/3 bath 2600 sq. ft on 1 acre.  11 years ago it was $2700 when we built is.

DREDIOCK, Our houses are very similar minus the 1/2 bath and out building. Plus I have a basement. Our taxes here are about $4,300 a year.

My problem is school taxes. With not having any children I feel I shouldn't have to pay school tax or it should be discounted. When I went to school I attended private schools that my parents paid tuition for. I feel they shouldn't have to pay school tax either.

Some school districts are worse than others.  Unfortunately my Father built a house in Coatesville that got raped on the property tax prices mid build.

It went from a standard 5k for a big house on a nice lot, to 9k in a year.

Apparently the school superintendent somehow legally finegled out 13 million dollars of the schools money.  As he quit, he had the school (out of the blue) sign a non-lawsuit contract with him.  It was only then that they learned of the lost money.

The place was so messed up that they asked my Father to serve on the school board, even though we lived no where near it.

It shouldn't be a lawsuit issue, it's a criminal issue. They should arrest him and seize all of his assets.

You can't mess up the ol' boys club!  My Mom is the director of transportation for a med/small school corp.  She has to spend all plus some to keep her budget...so Government in general requires overspending to keep it going.

No offense, but that is one of the greatest evils of bureaucracy. People in mid-level positions' taking more time to simply preserve their position, rather than actually doing anything towards' the public good, such as cutting spending.

The school system in this town is one thing I have no complaints about.
It was THE deciding factor in us moving here.
I could have had a considerably larger house in North Brunswick 1 town over for around the same price. (but on much smaller property)
Problem was. With the rebuilding of New Brunswick. Alot the dirt was moving there. And the school system, as well as the town itself I could see was going to go into decline.

And judging from some of my nephews I was right.

Thing that kills me is when I visit my sister who lives about 20 min outside of Richmond VA
They and their neighbors have brand new houses (mine is 50 years old), twice the size. on larger lots and pay 1/4 the property taxes.

Now you southern folk know why your being re invaded by the north.

Oh and We aren't really invading you. We're escaping. Running away..Defecting as it were. LOL

thats pretty much the jest of it.
My mother used to have a state job.
And one of her largest complaints was the way they handle money.
If you have a section that is efficient and does more with less and DOESNT use up their entire budget Plus some.

the next year instead of being rewarded for a job well done.
They get their budget cut to the point where they dont have enough.

So they HAVE to spend all the money in the budget and then some just to insure they get enough to cover rising prices on anything the next year

My property taxes here in Indianapolis are $500 a month. That is a for an 870 square foot home with a 1 1/2 detached garage on a 54 x 200 lot. Heck your taxes are higher than my total house payment by a good margin. That is just shear greed on the local government's part.

House I'm looking to buy:

$11,000/year, but no state income tax.  Insurance (including windstorm, mold and flood) another $5K/year.  South Florida is interesting to say the least.

3 BR, 2B, kitchen and "grand" room.  2100 sq ft.  1 car garage.

You guys are getting off easy, compared to some folks I know.

I know folks that moved from 24k property tax.  Their home was nice, but it wasn't 1mil. or anything.

I know others in 3 bedroom single floor 1 bath houses that pay around 10-12k.

Remember you never own anything, you just rent it from the government.

End homestead tax now!
Refund renters their rent inflated portion of tax! (some states do this)

Easy damn solutions, doubt you'll hear anyone politically oriented mention it much.  "You have to pay for schools after all, and there's no other way we can tax people."  (hope my sarcasm is shining through)

How bad is the full tax burden of a family of 4 living in a moderately priced hose, making a decent living anyway?  50%?  I mean don't forget sales, car registration, income, to name the obvious ones, let alone property.

yall yanks are still carpetbaggers.
problem is yall bring yer ideas that ruint yer country in the 1st place, down here and messing it all up.
back when I was in school it was 32 kids per teacher/class.
we disrupt class. we got our bottoms turned into grass, 3 times. once at school, once at home from mom, then again when the old man got home from work.
now it is 14-15 kids per teacher/class and they are graduating dumber than a bag full of hammers.
good thing is, people are getting riled over all them yankee ideas of taxes for schools.
the last 2 bonds for schools votes got shot down but hard.
the head guy left crying, then it came to light he was a lying so and so.
all it was doing is giving fat raises to overpaid teachers, admins, etc.
now they need to start firing some of the staff. roughly 600 are employed by the school system.
the budget is off the charts per pupil. only 7,600 students tops per school year in the county.
mostly in the upper 6000s in the past ten years.
little over $68 million per school year is too much.
total population in the county is a bit over 40,000.
most of the kids move away after graduating. ain't nothing here to stay for.
the average pay is around $23,000 a year and a lot of businesses are closing down or moving overseas.

bahh ain't editing any more, this topic is a flaming hot button, if there is one.
back on topic, the property tax increased over 700% in the past 10 years.
don't forget to count the property value increases. when they say the value went up, your taxes go up.
to me it is worth exactly what I paid for it, noooo they says. land worth $3,000 per acre is now around $28,000 - $75,000 per acre, they say.
flipping houses flippers and crooked real estate agents. I'll be more than happy to see the bubble bust all over the country.
a word to the wise,
I got this from my old man (Father, Pops, Dad). this is what he told me
"the house "you" live in ain't an investment. it is a roof over your head, stupid."
thought about it for awhile, yep he is right.

HUD housing and Social Security Disability. No property tax, but I'm seriously afraid of our shower. The wall is literally nothing but a waterproof panel with caulking around it, except that it warped and popped the caulking. Now we could probably sell the black mold that falls out of it to the terrorists for bioweaponry. Since every apartment is a carbon-copy, it's the same all around the complex.

Anyway, slightly more on topic (though probably still nowhere near), Erika's dad's reason for not voting through our school levy (tiny property tax increase, as our land values are so retardedly high that we only need a tiny increase) was that the school's don't provide enough classes for his extremely math-oriented daughter. This last year, we didn't have any tissues for the last month and a half because we couldn't afford them. We got to use "festive colored" paper because we ran out of white. One teacher retired at the end of the year, three either quit or were let go because we can't afford them.
Yeah, makes sense.

Anyway, rant off. Sorry about that. :D
