Aces High on PS3
« on: July 29, 2008, 01:00:10 PM »
I'm curious if anyone has done it yet. The PS3 will run any Linux OS with no problems so it should be pretty easy to do in theory. I've got it in my long range plans for next near but dont feel like messing with the PS3 as of yet....but curious if anyone has beat me to it....

Never even thought about doing it....

In theory it would probably be possible....

I have even seen Vista on the PS3......

Could only imagine how easy AH would run on the PS3 considering the guts it has.

You'd be broke because you just created a useless piece of hardware.

You should have no troubles installing and running Linux on a PS3, it was designed from the onset to be able to use Linux.  I think though you might have some troubles getting AH to run or any other PC centric game and I believe it's due to the hardware in the PS3.

Thats what I'm curious about Ack....

I know that AH is natively capable of running on multiple processors but nothing is really written specifically for seperate processing units (forget what PS3 architecture calls them). The video would be fine, but I think the ram is very marginal...but dont know how it functions in the PS3. Since AH is CPU intensive I'm curious how the benifit of the 8 processing cores would work vs the lower memory...

Course, the Wii sucks, it's graphics stink and it's very expensive, with a PS3, you can do SOME  of the stuff.

Not to mention the most important part, unlike the PS3 and Xbox 360 (Yes, you can mod your Xbox to run Linux also, just like the original Xbox), the Wii can't run Linux.

And the Wii doesn't suck, it's a great party console.

Yeah, I'm thinking along the same lines as you regarding the Cell architecture and the RAM.  I'd check out some of the Yellow Dog Linux forums and see if anyone has tried running a PC game on a Linux PS3.  Yellow Dog was made specifically to be used on the PS3.

Take note that Sony has disabled any of the "advanced" (read: useful) portions of the video processing unit when running under Linux to prevent Linux games damaging PS3 game sales. So, I doubt the PS3 would meet the video requirements, despite the immense CPU power.
