They were radar fused, not guided. The real shells were aimed in the usual way with an operator feeding data into an electromechanical target laying computer.

In RL shortly after being fired the radar fuse starts sending out weak radio pulses. If the pulse hits a nearby object (i.e. a plane) it bounces off and is picked up by the receiver part of the radar fuse which then sets the shell off.

Before radar fuses many shells would pass harmlessly a few feet past the enemy plane, before exploding outside of lethal range. They would need to either be fused to go off at exactly the right distance or actually hit the plane.

What we have in aces high is called Phalanx CIWS not 5 inch puffy ack- instead of normal 20mm bullets we simply have 5 inch shells.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phalanx_CIWS

Quote
he land based C-RAM has been recently deployed in a short range ballistic missile defense role to shoot down incoming rockets and artillery fire.
Another word the 5 inch is deployed on ships to shoot down incoming lanc stukas.

Quote
The gun fires at a variable 3000/4500 rounds per minute depending on the Block

Yep about how many shells fly at you when you get near a CV in any kind of plane.

I do think its time I post in wishlist for tomahawk land cruise missiles and harpoons for ship on ship attacks. Wait... Aces high, I want submarines and turtles.

There were examples of AA guns on ships using radar to aim the guns, or rather to feed data into the targetting computer. HMS Prince of Wales used radar layed AA fire during the Japanese attack that sank it in 1941.

However gun laying radars were seperate to the main search radar as seen on the AH CV. You can use your imagination as to whether the AH CV's guns are targetted by radar or eye, but knocking out the ship's search radar would have made no difference to its ability to aim its guns either way.

I know the Germans did work on a highly developed AA radar land system. I cant remember the name of it or if it actually saw action. I know America developed a highly advanced radar aiming system for our 90mm gun. When used with proximity fuses it was highly effective against aircraft and V1 buzz bombs. I honestly dont know if we ever put the system to use on a USN ship during the war.

Puffy ack on CVs in AH is NOT ack.

It's proximity-generated explosions.

There is no firing, no arc, no trajectory, no tie to radar or crew. It literally populates RANDOMLY inside a box around your plane no matter WHERE your plane is or what it's doing!

The ONLY link it has to anything on the fleet itself is that it stops if all the 5" guns are destroyed.

I think it's client side too. I've been bracketed for 5+ minutes straight before and my wingmen never saw any around me. I think only  manned 5" has trajectory and is visible to other players.

5" puffy needs to totally be removed from the game. The INTENDED results and the ACTUAL results in-game are total polar opposites.

It's INTENDED to spread out and be less likely to hit if you are faster, turning, diving, climbing, rolling, whatever. It ACTUALLY hits you MORE reliably if you are any of these, meanwhile steady unmoving bomber formations can come in at any alt without taking a single 5" hit from AI guns.

REMOVE PUFFY ACK OR FIX IT PLEASE! IT'S TOTALLY BASS ACKWARDS!

I find to be good fun to sometimes man the twin 5" on a CV when there's a lot of NME nearby. When the shells get close enough, it's cool to see them pop the fighters or bombers. The pilot probably wonders what hit him.  :rock  :D

It has been my experience in AH that Puffy ack never forgets. Once it fires at you it will keep on firing until your dead, below 3k or well out of range. Even if you should go under 3k and run, once you do pop back up it will start firing at you again. It does not matter if others are higher or closer than you, it will continue to fire all the way out to max range and maybe even beyond as long as your above 3k.

Puffy ack never forgets!

Edit: What is max range anyway? I can't even see the thing when it's still firing at me sometimes.

idk if its just me but the other day a friend and i were hovering around a CV....i went closer and the puffy ack started at me...i stayed in puffy ack and just high enough to stay out of ack.  My friend dives in and all puffy ack is then concentrated on him, along with the ack.  This was enough for me to drop my ord and sink the Cv.  idk if its just or not though
