Congress: No annoying airplane cell phone calls
« on: July 31, 2008, 07:31:53 PM »
With ALL the problems going on in this country and around the world THIS is what Congress worked on all day today??????????? :furious

Take a good look at the folks who sponsored this pile of crap. These are the same bastards that complain about Bush's evil empire taking away the rights of American citizens?? Just what the hell do they think they're doing?

God I'm ready for the 2nd American Revolution, just tell me were to sign up.

WASHINGTON - Cell phone calls on airplanes in flight are not only unsafe, they're obnoxious and they should be permanently banned, according to some members of Congress.

House members, most of whom board airplanes almost every week, traded horror stories Thursday about their worst experiences with annoying fellow passengers who talk loudly on cell phones before takeoff and after landing. One lawmaker said his wife sat next to a woman who loudly discussed her sex life on the phone.

Another House member topped that with the passenger sitting him behind on one flight who got a "dear John" phone call from either his wife or sweetheart just before takeoff. The begging and pleading was just terrible to listen to, he said. Finally, with the plane ready to take off, a flight attendant had to threaten to have U.S. Marshals drag the man off the plane before he finally put his phone away.

A third House member raised the specter of national security, saying she'd witnessed one man use his cell phone camera to take pictures of sensitive parts of the airplane.

With that, the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee approved by voice vote a bill that would make the current Federal Aviation Administration and Federal Communication Commission ban on cell phone use during flight permanent.

The committee's action comes as the European Union is moving to allow airline passengers to talk on their cell phones during flight. Some U.S. airlines are experimenting with in-flight Internet access. And some lawmakers worry that domestic airlines might try to get the cell phone ban lifted so they can charge passengers extra to sit in no-phone sections.

"I do believe this is important that we don't make what is already a crowded and difficult environment for the traveling public and flight attendants" worse by allowing cell phone use in-flight, said Rep. Peter DeFazio, D-Ore., sponsor of the Halting Airplane Noise to Give Us Peace (HANG UP) Act.

But Rep. John Mica, R-Fla., said there are a lot of annoying things on airplanes, including children with dirty diapers and noisy MP3 players, but that doesn't mean they should be banned.

"You are trying to legislate courtesy, folks, and that just doesn't work," Mica said.

Alright, I'll let the cell phone ban slide, if you take Representative Mica's advice and ban children too.

because cell phones are so dangerous. they've cause soooo many crashes to date. ban them all.

maybe they should strap all the passengers in their seats too, put the shock bracelets on them, and then just before takeoff, pump the passengers cabins full of anasthesia.

Guess it's finally starting to sink in?

They want CONTROL!  Thats what all this is about!

Too many forget............

We lost many of our rights when we asked government to control
our neighbors for our benefit -- or simply looked the other way when others did
so.

What government can do to our neighbor, it can -- and will -- do to us. Freedom is something that we must give to others if we wish it for ourselves.
It's been said we have three brains, one cobbled on top of the next. The stem is first, the reptilian brain; then the mammalian cerebellum; finally the over developed cerebral cortex.  They don't work together in awfully good harmony - hence ax murders, mobs, and socialism.

hah, what "sensitive" parts that there hasn't been already photographed by multi thousand dollar dSLR cameras several times over? There's even "sensitive" documents available, of course some may cost you a whole 40 bucks. I guess the "sensitive" part of the plane means the cockpit, which are very well documented all over the net.

Even funnier is that someone tries to push the ban based on a story that happened exactly because of the ban.

They don't need to ban it. People like me that travel frequently enjoy not having telephone access at 35,000 feet for 1-15 hours. There is nothing so urgent that I need to try to take care of it while sitting on a plane many hundreds of miles away from home or office that my wife, parents, co-workers, etc... can't take care of while I am unreachable. Hell I enjoy not having phone conversations during that time. It allows me to get reports done and other things like that. I would like to see internet access allowed but don't give some sorority chick phone access while she is sitting next to me chatting the whole time about her spring break love interest BS.

i have better ideas. get congress's collective noses out of silly watermelon like this. it's not their job or place to do this.

they should be concentrating on helping to improve the country. help the troops. help us. trim some fat off of their oversized budgets.  i'm sure there's plenty of you out there that know many more things than i do that they could do to help the country.
