Was it Warbirds that used to have craters that would actually do damage if you rolled over them?  I can't remember.  How many times has this been suggested in AH?

Wouldn't disabling a runway with bombs circumvent the need to disable hangars?

Do we want one well placed 1000lbs bomb closing a field?

(Yes, I know that you can take off in the grass.)

Of course, in real life one well placed 1000lb bomb will disable that runway until it's fixed. Here in AH it doesn't, because it's set to accomodate another non real life factor called the accuracy of level bombing in AH.

In real life a level bomber at any sort of bombing altitude would be very lucky to hit the runway with just one bomb drop.

So the real answer is to decrease the accuracy of level bombing, but allow for a larger blast effect and a crater effect. This would cause level bombers to drop salvos of bombs on fields to do damage, but if some hit on runways the runways would need fixing prior to use. Sounds like the real thing doesn't it?

What we have now is a B17 or B26 dropping bombs one or two at a time, aimed perfectly from high altitudes, and hitting specific buildings and targets. As a result the sim is set to have no cratering effects from bombs to overcome this shortcoming. It's a bit like the two wrongs make a right deal.

I would love to see that changed.

even if the runways were bombed, that would only affect the jets. in ww2 any plane of buff that was prop-driven could land and take off in grass fields. Wasnt the best thing to do, but they could.

I thought that was happening here.  I have had that happen to me here in AH.  I was trying to take off and keep crashing before I even left the hanger area, plane would tip to the left and crash.  I thought I was doing something wrong and kept starting over.  After about the 3rd time I went around to the grass,  there was a crater in front of the hanger.

There should be "bomb drift", as a result of winds aloft.  Low level bombing, 10K or less would not be effected as much as a buff at 20K plus.  Make it drift IMHO.

I think it would be a bad thing.

why not just have a bomb sight setup like we had in warbirds(dunno what bombing was like in the post 2.01 days though)
where you would have to fly straight and level for a certain period of time before the bombsight would be calibrated. anything but a minor change in heading would through you aim off by a noticable amount
it would at least stop a single bomber from hitting targets that have severel hundred yards of lateral seperation in one pass.
and sure why not...let bomb craters damage planes...you would still have to drop a bomb on the end of each runway AND in front of every hanger as well....just keep the repair time short...say 5 minutes or so...

[edit]it would give the attackers only a short term advantage(hey 5 minutes can go by pretty quickly).and i don't think it would have much effect on GV's unless one hit the crater at high speed..and no matter what, don't give the buff pilot credit for a crater kill[/edit]

was the hanger destroyed?? if so,u were proberlly hitting wreakage.

also,i think in 1.03 craters made your plane jump up,this might not be true,as i haven't played that version 4 ages

Seems to me those of you that get pissed off that a 1000lber would stop your smooth take off, you should take a look at the film of what a REAL 1000lber does! I live near London, maybe 3-4 miles as the bird flies.Well i heard the IRA bomb (roughly 500lbs i believe) go off! it absolutely wrecked the financial part of the city.Try and see some newsclips of the damage then maybe you would appreciate more the true terror bombing caused, here a bomb near misses your tank and you happily fire away!
in real life the shockwave would probably throw your tank 100's of yards with you a shattered bag of broken bones and shattered eardrums inside it.
I still think if you made bombers gunners as weak as they really were, that is to say not 'slightly tweaked' but then made bombs as powerfull as 'they' really were we wouldnt care about how hard it was to live in a bomber.that horrendous destruction you got to cause to the enemy if you did get through would make you try and try again i think, that way you could make the bombs less accurate and harder to hit pinpoint targets and maybe we would start using them how they really were used?
also timed fuses so we could drop at extremely low altitudes and escape the blast? They did it in the war , why not in ah?
