Tank Killer - Massive Overkill
« on: August 07, 2008, 12:45:33 PM »
I thought you guys might like to see this. This is one of the weapon systems we (we were Vought back in the day) made back in the 80's and 90's to counter the next generation of Soviet tanks (FST, Future Soviet Tank). As it turned out, the FST never really showed up, and the company subsequently chose to downsize the weapon since the extreme lethality of the original wasn't considered necessary for current threats.

The weapon is guided by a laser from the rear which sends course corrections mid-flight. It does not require laser-designation of the target. It has no warhead, instead using a tungsten penetrator rod (similar to the "silver bullet" fired by the M1A1, but heavier and with a much higher impact velocity). Max speed is ~5000 f/s with a max range flight time of only 4 seconds, making counter-fire extremely difficult. (BTW, the missile is still plenty lethal after 4 seconds, but by then the titanium fins have pretty much melted from aerodynamic heating)

This particular launcher is based on a Hummer with 4 shots, but we also made a Bradley variant with 10 shots.

Very Cool :aok, Enjoy:

What was the range on that shot in the video? It sure looked slower than a main gun sabot round to me.

Two things are for sure:

One, even if you saw the puff of smoke and realised what it was....it's already too late.  You would barely have enough time to get the words "OH $#!%" out of your mouth.

Two, main gun rounds cannot lock on and track.

Try to keep in mind that the same could be said for the flash of the muzzle of a main gun. Secondarily the target in the clip was stationary. If you are fast enough you don't need to track.

My question is related to the range. It was obviously in line of sight and the rocket does not have near instantaneous accelleration like the cannon round has. This means the rocket would have to track on a moving target since while it might get faster as time goes on it will take time to get up there. It's a situation the TOW addresses as well.

That thing reminds me of a turret we cast for Vought when I worked in a foundry as a process engineer. It was an interesting project and did something like that one does. We cast a few of them, the turrets, in the late '90s. The video I saw of what we were working on was kind of a bunker buster type thing on a humvee chassis.

The Soviets had thermal imaging like we do.  At most, a humvee may have been able to get one shot off.

Shrimp that didn't pan out in GW1 or later in iraq either. Having the thermal equipment does not equate to having the range.
