Was just listening to a Spitfire pilot/owner talking about his pre-flight, and he was describing how and why he checked the condition of the wheel housings and the flaps for mud and grass.
He said, more or less, that raising and lowering of the flaps and gears affected the efficiency of the radiator and thus the temperature of the engine.
