My concerns about 1.03 were unfounded
« on: June 28, 2000, 08:44:00 AM »
This is just a quick note to HTC in case they are reading the board.

Last night was the first night I was able to play 1.03 online.  I have been reading the boards about framerate concerns after 1.03 was released and I was a little worried that I would be SOL after 1.03 was released.  Here's why I was worried:

Pentium Pro 200mhz
128meg RAM
Creative Labs Graphics Blaster 16meg
33.3 Modem connecting at 28.8 max

I have to say that my worries that my system would no longer be able to handle AH appear to have been unfounded.  Before 1.03 I had a general frame rate of 15 - 24 (which to me is still quite playable); nobody ever told me I was warping.  I play at the resolution that's over 1000 (sorry I can't remember what it is exactly, I'm at work) with ground clutter on.

In general my framerate did not suffer.  By "in general" I mean when not near the new special effects (i.e. normal flying (love my bombers)).  In fact, it seems like my framerate may have actually gone up a bit; average framerates were 20 - 25.  And then I turned off ground clutter and even went up to 33.

The only time I had real problems were when there were three or more smokes at a field and at least 10+ cons in the air (I was in an M16).  Then my framerate dipped to 10, which is pushing it.  Even with multiple small fires and maybe one smoke, my framerate was still 15+ (like I said, it's good for me since I've never known framerates over 25-30).

All in all, even though my PC is below the current minimum specs, I am able to play 1.03 (so far) with little or no differences from the previous version.  Thank you very much HTC.

Fury

p.s. the smoke, fires, and ack bursts are really cool (can't think of anything else to describe them   ) and the clouds/sunrise-sunsets and night was a whole lot of beauty and fun.

WTF?????

Pentium II 333Mhz
128 RAM
Creative Labst Voodoo Banshee 16meg
56Kmodem connecting at 33.3 max

In 1.02 FRs averaged some 15-20

My best FR goes 15 at its best...and I am flying with 9 most of the time.

How come you have 20-25!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Seems my system is better...and I have less Framerate????

Any hints?

It's all in the Video card Ram!

BTW good cards are dropping in price fast these days.

I'm running a P2 266 mmx with a Diamond Stealth 8mb 2x AGP card and framerates often up in the 30's.

I have to be IN the smoke before it drops below 15.

I'm not a hardware guy but it would be interesting to see if anyone else can figure that out.

Tonight I will keep track (i,e, write down and post tomorrow) my framerates at different times.  My framerates do differ depending on  the situation (takeoff, altitude, clouds, smoke/fires, number of planes in the vicinity) but even under the most stressfull situations it never went under 10 (note: I did not actually try to fly through the smoke, but I was close).

The "in general" might make it seem better than it really is, which is why I will keep track of what my framerates are at different times (one example I can think of is that sitting on a deserted runway in the cockpit of a 17 drops my framerates to 12 but it gets better when I fly (possibly the ground objects and the cockpit taxing the system?)).

Oh yes I do run the hi-res patch also.

I guessed it...but I have a motherboard with x1 AGP slot...so no card change for now...

Well, learning to fly in jumps

Ram-

If you have a PCI slot, you can get TNT2's or VooDoo5's that come in PCI flavors.

i fully agree with Fury,

i have a Pentium 200mmx, o'clocked to 233mhz
with a voodoo 2, and my FPS is usualy at 20-30 when in Air (clutter off).
Only at Ground near the Hangars my FPS drops, but thats not a big problem.
I also use Shift + F2 or F3 when Clouds are visible and then my Frame rate stay ok.
I love the Zoom function when Dogfighting, it also increase my FPS alot !
There is only one thing i would love to see in future releases, something like the shift + F3
but only for the Airfields, where you can decrease the Polygon count at the Bases.
