Sort of an odd question
« on: August 10, 2008, 01:34:06 AM »
Does anyone know the diameter of the P51's nose?  I'm talking spinner.  If not that, what about the height of the tallest part of the body, NOT height of the aircraft with gear out.

edit:  I have tried looking it up online and I'm getting 28 1/4" for the nose, but I would like to confirm this.

I'd have a better chance in running into a Dodo Bird in the middle of rush hour, walking down the I-5 with two hookers in tow before I see a useful post from glock89- Ack-Ack

The base diameter is 28-1/8" and tapering forward gradually for 26-3/4" (the height of the spinner from base to tip). Please dont ask me to create a formula for the curve.

Yes Waffle, thanks, but it brings up another question.  Both of those said 12 1/16, where as the other two sources stated 28 and a fraction.

On the second image it says "spinner mount", so does this mean it isn't the entire spinner, but only a portion where they mounted the prop?

That would mean that from the "spinner mount" portion to the base of the nose, you would have to widen it by at least 8 inches, and that just doesn't seem right to me.

confusedly yours,

Mensa

edit:

I think that best depicts what I'm trying to say.

I'd have to say though, the most likely answer to all this is that I have no idea what I'm talking about.

Doesnt look right even though it says P51D on the first drawing. The second one says A36 and P51A. Maybe these are some kind of section ahead of the prop blades?

Bodhi might be a good resource to ask, as he restores Warbirds.  I don't think they have a Pony in their shop right now, but given the amount of work they do, and the numerous Ponies out there, he might know or have drawings...
