Check your mic using Windows sound recording. START > PROGRAMS > ACCESSORIES > ENTERTAINMENT > SOUND RECORDING.
If you cant get a playback from your mic, open audio properties and check to see if your mic is enabled for sound input. You may have to check the mic boost box.

Adding a microphone requires setting it as the default recording device in Windows.

If you have the default sound control panel for Windows (there are some obnoxious sound chips which insist on stomping on the default sound control panel), right-click on the speaker ICON in the system tray, select "Adjust Audio Properties", then select the "Audio" tab.  Press the "Volumn" button in the "Sound Recording" section of the panel, and make sure the "Microphone" is selected (check box).

In Windblows, click on Start--> Run--> Type DxDiag--> click on the 'Network' tab---> Run the mic wizard.  This will set up your mic in Windblows.  If you get it running in the wizard you will have it working in game.  If it doesn't then there might be a problem with your sound card or microphone.  Also, are you using an old sound card?  Some old sound cards were only half-duplex and won't be able to use your microphone while playing a game.  Full duplex sound cards are needed to use the microphone simultaneously with sound.

Oh, if your microphone has a mute switch, make sure it's not enabled.
