Very dangerous. :)

Kid and his dad were mauled in the Great Smokey Mountains yesterday.  Black Bear, which was odd but still possible.

Like the edit to the end.

Thought about hiking in bear country; You don't have to be the fastest, just not the slowest (in your group).

Just be in a group and don't get between a mother and her cubs and you should be fine.

And pack a .45magnum.
It was very interesting to carry out the flight trials at Rechlin with the Spitfire and the Hurricane. Both types are very simple to fly compared to our aircraft, and childishly easy to take-off and land. (Werner Mölders)

Thought about hiking in bear country; You don't have to be the fastest, just not the slowest (in your group).

Two hikers walking through the woods stumble across a grizzly bear about to attack.  One of the hikers opens up his back pack and starts to put on some running shoes.  The other hiker says, "Why do that?  You're not going to out run a grizzly."  The 1st hiker replies, "I know, I just have to out run you."

gotta love a classic.

I've encountered black bears 3 times and a large brown bear once.  Never once needed a firearm.  A small group of 4 or 5 packed in close making noise while you leave the area is all you need.

Had a black bear near Bridgeport California try to follow me into my tent one night. I hit the panic button to my dodge truck. People came out of their tents over to my camp telling stories of freaked out bears stampedeing through their campsights trying to get away from the panic horn. We had to untangle one tent to get the campers out. Seems it was the last tent out of the campsight up the stream the bears used to come down from the higher areas. The whole herd of stampedeing bears ran over their tent. They had no clue what happened....one comment was...it sounded like a heavy breathing pervert convention ran over us......... :devil

This is like the old joke that voters are harsher to their beer brewer if he has an outage, than their politicians after raising their taxes. Death and taxes are certain but, fun and sex is only now.

oh wow!  Thats crazy!

I remember waking up on a camping trip when it snowed 4 or 5 inches early in the night.  In the morning we could follow a bear tracks where one came in sniffed around and left.

My brother-in-law, who in stark contrast to my urbanised/wussified self has actually spent years working in the forest, says he only ever had one "bad bear encounter." He tells me it was a juvenile male throwing its weight around, bluff-charging at them repeatedly. Bro says he and his mate basically made themselves big, yelled and screamed at it, swung their hatchets when it got too close.

Me, I occasionally encounter geckos (shudder!)
... missions were to be met by the commitment of alerted swarms of fighters, composed of Me 109's and Fw 190's, that were strategically based to protect industrial installations. The inferior capabilities of these fighters against the Mosquitoes made this a hopeless and uneconomical effort. 1.JD KTB

Remember. you might be able to survive a grizzly atack by playing dead.
But if you are attacked by a black bear. Fight with everything you have.
They will eat you anyway.
Back to the original post.

#1 how many average people know what bear crap looks like?
#2 How many people do you know willing to go through the trouble to smell it?

#3 if you have never seen bear crap before. And only see one pile.
How do you know if its a large pile or a smaller one?
Death is no easy answer
For those who wish to know
Ask those who have been before you
What fate the future holds
It ain't pretty

At least one.  Hopefully we can stop him from trying to follow some bears around and sniff their poop.
