Survey of ping times!
« on: September 11, 2000, 04:58:00 PM »
I had some funky things going on with my DSL connection today

When trouble-shooting what the problem might be I pinged several sites I normally use.  The HT site gave me an average of 86mls.  I was curious what others here might be getting. I will continue to ping it several times today to get an over all average.

Have any here done the same?

I’m not real savvy on what the ping really tells me other that how many packets come n go as well as how long it takes.  Any input on that would be nice.

Once again mine was 86mls 4 0ut of 4 received.

NOTE: To test you ping rate:

In windows 98:

Click start

Run

Type (Do not type quotations): “command.com” <enter>

At the C: prompt type: “ping -n 100 216.192.19” <enter> (Notice the spacing)

(The above address is for the actual game server)

When doing the above I got:
96 out of 100 I.e. lost 4 packets
Minimum = 46mls Max.=336mls Ave.=114

That's what I did Pongo. However, I wonder if there is a different IP for the game?

Yes, the game server is not the same as the Web server. The IPs for the game routes are:

beta.hitechcreations.com   (standard route)

alt.hitechcreations.com  (alternate route)

You're right Camel, those were domain names, not IPs.

Thanks Camel! That is a big help!

On 216.91.192.19   I got an average of 43mls at 11:15 CST.

Keep in mind where people are pinging from. I.e. city, state, country etc.

If you want significant data on packet loss, do something like ping -n100 www.hitechcreations.com.

Mine are about 40 ms but I have something a lot better than DSL or cable modem.

On 30 pings it averaged to 173ms, 176ms to Alt, no loss. The jump over the Atlantic is 100ms of those.

The ping gives you the best case or alerts to the worst problems.

I have tried a DSL (Juno) several times - connection with a ping less then 115ms and no ping packets loss.
In the evening it is not delivering UDP packets used by AH, so it is completely unplayable.
Hosts on the route are not obligated to deliver UDP traffic timely or at all. Even though they respond to ping perfectly...

Fortunately I have another DSL through another provider (Mindspring) that seems to work.
