P-47N VS P-51D

I was flying a P-47N over 20K. I tangled with a P-51D and he gave me way too much respect. I am not a good pilot and i thought the D-Pony was king of high alt fighting. I did not think the P-47N comanded that much respect from a D-Pony up where he is in his element.

How about a little more explanation of what happened?  If the P-51D pilot simply ran away, well, you gotta get used to that.

The P-51D is good at high altitude, but the P-47N is better and simply owns the Pony when you get to 30k and higher; if only it had more WEP.  Other good high altitude rides are the Spitfire XIV and Ta-152.

Any P-47 only gets better with altitude. P-47N is a MONSTER @ altitude and should give a 51 a good fight if the pilots have similar skill levels.

All 47s perform excellent up above 20k. They really rule the roost up there. The B pony is brilliant up high and will out climb the 47N at all altitudes. Still above 20k i think i'd still prefer the 47N.

Without WEP, the 47N is pretty damn average.

The P-47N is a little better than the Pony in a head-to-head fight in AHII right now, if the Pony doesn't have too much of an initial advantage. The Jug rolls better, is deadlier on the snapshot, turns better with flaps, and is generally more stable trying to turn at low speeds. This maneuvering advantage for the Jug is HIGHLY inaccurate, but this is what we've got.

As long as you keep the Jug light that is. The P-47 can carry a ton of fuel (With 50% fuel it will fly as long as the D-40 does on 75%...with 75% the N flies for nearly 45 minutes!) At 50% fuel with the 267rpg 8 gun package, you're okay.

The disadvantage of the Jug here, is of course it only matches the P-51D's engine power for 5 minutes. Without WEP, it is well below the Mustang in top speed and climb until very high alts. Whereas the Mustang is running along at some truly screaming speeds in normal cruise configuration. This arguably makes the Mustang equal or better than the P-47 for the general MA melee.

Perhaps, debatable. I do like having dive brakes. Either can turn well enough to kill a la-la, with flap usage. I believe, but do not recall for certain, that the P-47N can turn a smaller circle with full flaps, because of that extra WEP thrust. That is why you save WEP for when you really, really, need it.

However, one thing is for certain:  Jug models WITHOUT the ability to go 365mph on the deck are inferior in every way to the ubiquitous Spixteens at typical alts in the LW MA. And Jugs that can go 365mph on the deck can actually catch the P-51s and other planes that would simply extend otherwise.

Well, to each his own. Perk points are unimportant to me. Being able to run down a P-51/Fw-190 and out-run a Spitfire IS important to me. Without that extra dollop speed in you get in the N, there is really no reason to choose a Jug over a Hog down low, except ord load.

N DOES accelerate faster in dive, and is stable at somewhat higher speeds than D40 (not that it will hold them long)
