Thx for good links Lyric but it still seems to me that while the fairing is rather large and extends to rather large area on the fuselage it does not extend that far to the wing, OR the angle in fairing is just sharper in the real plane making it look smaller than in that new 3D model.

That picture is of a Ki-100, not an N1K2-J.

Notice the shape of the tail.  It is all wrong for the N1K2-J, but just right for a Ki-61/Ki-100.

No, this picture is NOT N1K2-J. This is Type-5 (KI-100) fighter.

If it were an N1K2-J it would have four dweebsticks sticking out of the wings (just kidding :D )
As others have said, it's a Ki100, which is a Ki61 with a last-minute engine switch.

Seems so, sorry about that.

Check this out: http://www.aviastar.org/air/japan/kawanishi_n1k-j.php

It seems that all the drawn pictures have different proportions and shapes so only the photos are a somewhat reliable source of the actual shape.

What about this: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Oshibuchi_shiden-kai.jpg

Nice illustration of N1K development progression:

As ordered, a seaplane fighter.  The "N" prefix means seaplane fighter, the following "1" mean the first such ordered, then the "K" means designed by Kawanishi and lastly the second "1" means it is the first version.
N1K1

In the next version the floats have been removed and it has been redesigned as a land based interceptor.  The letter designation for land based interceptor was "J", so that is now added on as a "-J" indicating it has been modified to be a land based interceptor.  You can see this code style at work with the A6M2-N "Rufe" as well, a carrier fighter "A" modified to be a seaplane fighter "-N".  In the N1K1-J it still retains the mid-wing construction of its seaplane roots.
N1K1-J

In the final service version there was major redesign work done.  The wing was lowered to improved pilot visibility and removed the overly complex telescoping landing gear that were prone to failure.  The tail was fully redesigned. The cowl guns were omitted and all four of the 20mm cannons were moved inside the wing.  The ammunition supply for the 20mm cannons was made integral to the wing, greatly increasing the quantity of ammunition that could be carried.  Most importantly the total number of parts, and consequently man hours to build, were cut by approximately 50%.
N1K2-J

As to the wing roots, here is a screenshot of our new N1K2-J:

The fairings might extend a bit too far back on the new AH N1K2-J.  It is hard to tell in the photo of the N1K2-J as the green color does not show depth very well in that lighting.  The black and white photo of the N1K1 does have large fairings, but that is a mid-wing design from before the major redesign so I don't know how valid it is.   In the photo of the N1K2-J as compared to the screen shot it seems the fairing starts further back on the wing and doesn't go quite so high up the fuselage.  It is almost as though the fairing shape is the same, but the fairing polygon on the AH model hasn't been pushing quite far enough in.

Not a very remarkable airplane in anything other than its turn radius and quantity of cannons. Poor roll rate.

I'd say its more dangerous to dedicated turnfighters than a Spit16 because of these qualities and its propensity to HO, less dangerous to E fighters than a Spit16 because its top speed, climb, and dive limitations are all fairly moderate. The fact that it gets its best turn out of flaps usage will make it much harder to handle for the inexpert.

I thought something was off, too, until checking into it more.

I think the AH model is about right... Maybe the only issue is the smoothness at the very trailing edge of the wing fillet, which should blend a bit more subtly into the tail.

Thanks lyric 1,

What is your impression of the N1K2-J when you are standing next to it?

I will add that I like the fillet, it adds something different to the N1K2-J.  Most aircraft don't have a fillet that stands out nearly that much.  Heck, it is big enough that it looks like it might add some surface area and help with turning.

That's a Ki-100, not a N1K2-J.....

Looking at the new AH2 Niki & the real plane it self I think the radius on the real plane is larger on the bottom of the fuselage leading away from the back of the wing were it tucks under the plane. I think the top edge of the blend to the wing root is not a hard lined edge once you pass the rear of the wing it seems to be more of a gradual blend that is not such a hard line as in the AH2 plane. I think the one panel over the wing that has a vertical line clearly shows that there is two separate pieces to form that large radius over & behind the wing were the AH2 plane is not that clear.

I was wondering where that photo of the N1k with the bent props was taken?

I make it a habit to visit every aviation museum/exhibit that I can.  I don't recognize that museum/location...  Hoping for a new vacation destination.  My wife is hoping you won't post an answer.   :lol

She's probably safe, it looks like the signs are in Japanese.

Hehe, probably so.  We visited Japan a few years ago, doubt I could get her to agree to a return visit until after we have hit a few locations on her list first.
