Small Business
« on: August 19, 2008, 11:45:34 AM »
I need some Ideas.  I live in a very rural area of Southcentral Georgia.  I have done just about everything there is to do as far as work.  Run machinery, Soldier, Computers, and I am currently working IT support for a small 2 year college.  I make OK money here.  I can pay my bills, but I cant do anything else.  I can't get a Down Payment for a home, I cant take my wife and kids out to eat, etc etc.

I need something that is fairly inexpensive to start, something I can do part time, just to bring in some extra money.  Not looking for something to replace my job (unless I could).  Mainly just want to suppliment what I already have.

Any Ideas?

Web design or programing?

Both are easily done remotely and often you can earn side money and learn while doing your day job.  Maybe you can get cheap/free classes where you work?

If you want to make money here are a few suggestions.

1) find something that is out of the ordinary or specialized. (look in the phone book and see how many other are doing the same business one good example would be lawyers vs auto wrecking yards)

2) recession proof your business (anything to do with essential items are good. eg. food and/ or water)

3) Never gamble (in business or life) more than you are prepared to lose.

4) go all in or don't go. (family backs or don't do it)

I have talked to a number of hot dog vendors with their little carts. Doesn't look like they make money but do the math. :aok One guy I know has grossed more than $10,000 in four days at an airshow!!!!

How is the Real Estate market there?

I had a friend who needed a similar kind of thing, and he became a locksmith. It did require taking a course and a modest investment in tools, but he developed a great part time job which paid very nicely, and he always seemed to have as much work as he wanted to do.
I know a couple of guys around here who started lawn care businesses on the side. Seems there are plenty of folks who will pay well to have their grass cut. Of course that is seasonal.
Good luck with it...look around and find a niche that is unfilled.

You could go in to Desk top publishing,
My wife does business cards, calenders, Reports, posters, etc at home and then goes down to the local print shop and prints them. Her major expenses are the software program, and the network connection. Most of her business comes from word of mouth and a card or two in the local markets.
Just a thought,

Would love to, but I was discharged medically from the Army.  20% disability from the VA.  Don't think they would let me.

I have actually been thinking of something along these lines, or web design.  Just not sure where to start yet.  Still thinking and looking.  I do have a good friend who owns a promo shop here.  I can get the printing stuff done at discounted rates.

Have you thought about becoming a Realtor?

Or... go around to different convenience stores, grocery stores, gas stations, are there Real Estate magazines, flyers, digests? Maybe you could start your own publication? Its cheaper than you think, you just have to cover the cost of printing, and the mental anguish of dealing with realtors.  :lol

Huge business opportunity in pack and peddle business - get 150 drops and easily can make 100 to 150 G's a year- know some guys who work 3 days a week... doing it.

If not through someone like this - find a candy and or snack supplier looking for expansion...
