Engine toggling
« on: August 21, 2008, 11:02:54 PM »
This is an experienced flier doing this! I will not give his name so dont ask. I watched him do this three times in less than a minute. He has twenty knits around to help him half of them have alt on the bish that are there. When I saw him turn his engine off I rolled film and went after him a lot harder. Its over his own field he has ack to run to too and he uses it.

Very lame IMO and he wont be getting anymore salutes.

Never understood what the concern was over this, from what I can gather it doesn't actually confer any advantage in a fight.

If you accept that it doesnt give an advantage then accept that he deserves to die for being stupid (Darwin theory). If you accept that it does offer any advantage at all no matter how brief then the 'C' word comes to mind. The game allows it though...

Consider it this way Chalenge. In WWII you could open the canopy and stick out your hand to slow down the plane. Since you can't do that here our pilots turn off the engine giving the same effect as sticking your arm out the canopy. :D

The film quality is so poor I had to watch it twice just to figure out what was going on.  No big deal, imo.  There are lots of things done in AH that are far, far worse.

I love it when people shut their engines off and think they will slow down way too fast for me to get a shot in, and I pick peices of their plane off. Then they complain when they have no E left.

Does it actually even make a difference?  There is a certain player that was coincidentally a knight as well who I always used to bump into, the fights were normally K4 vs. K4 and whenever I would get tight on his 6 he would do that.  I would just chop throttle, kick rudder, and it was only a matter of time before he got taterized.  Not ONCE did he ever force the overshoot, and this was with equally matched planes.

Edit: I also know another guy who due to physical limitations could not operate a throttle, so toggling by assigning his engine to a button on his stick was pretty much his only speed control.  It was balls to the walls or engine off.

While shutting the engine down is more of a hinderance than a help, dual throttle, or even switching between the two if youre fast enough can be a GREAT advantage in planes like the P-38 from what I've seen.

Shutting your engine down gives no advantage at all. Chopping your throttle to 0% is a much better way to slow down. On a 2 engine plane, its the same story. If you have 2 throttles, you can control each engine independently, and while being able to have the engines at different power settings would give you a slight advantage (if you knew what you were doing), totally turning off one of those engines would be stupid. My theory is when you turn off an engine, the game auto feathers your props for maximum glide, so you don't slow down. When you go to 0% throttle with the engine on, it doesn't do this, so there is a lot of drag and you slow down a bit better than if your engine was off. Now this is just my guess and you would have to talk to HiTech to know for sure. I could be totally wrong. All i know is I've fought pretty much every "great" pilot in the game, and I have never known any of them to shut their engine off in a dogfight. That alone might tell you something.

Dont we have the tools to test this now with camera shots being available?

No BigR you can still adjust rpm after the engine is off (as I said before) to reduce drag.

I'd say no, I do it simply because my throttle on my stick is busted, so I have 3 throttle settings, full, off, and WEP which makes it tough, and I really doubt a pilot in WWII wouldn't have throttle in flight  :aok
