Audio hardware Acceleration in Vista

Does Vista have a hardware acceleration setting for the sound like XP did? I have been experiencing sever stuttering when certain sounds are played.  I know that custom sounds can sometimes cause this but, I'm hoping that I don't have to go back to the stock audio.

Nope it doesnt have acceleration. The best thing you can do is find a card that does not use CPU as much and avoid onboard sound at all costs! I went with bluegears b-Enspirer (lowest CPU load of any sound card I could find info on) over the X-Fi series (which I tried first) and I have no problem in AHII. Sound is true 24-bit too unlike brand 'C.'

Vista does not have DirectSound support, which is where the acceleration slider used to be located.

Sounds are all played through the Vista sound mixer now, which does incur more overhead than DirectSound did on XP.

If you are using custom sounds, you might want to get rid of them if sounds are causing stutters.

Unfortunately all i have at the moment is a Sony crap-top, ALL on board. I am just trying to streamline it the best i can.  Not a good gaming machine but i'd settle for ray-traced 80's style graphics and 8 bit sound
