Long Range Tank Gunnery
« on: August 22, 2008, 01:32:43 PM »
Another player once explained to me how to expand the range scale of the tank optical sight for long range shots.  It was during a battle and I didn't take notes.  I found I could change the range scale but wasn't sure how to use it.   I've since forgotten what I was told.  I've searched for this in the help files and on the trainer's site without success.  Could one of you GV experts please explain this feature?  I'm tired of being killed by guys so far away I can hardly see them at full zoom.
Balrog in game. Some day my performance may justify the name. LOL

when in the 2nd position (gunner) press z to zoom in a bit. If that's still not enough then you can use the [] keys to zoom in more and back out. This will let you see further, and will make shooting those long range targets easier. As for ranging to that target I personally just fire and correct.

you can use the arrow keys to zoom more or less in addition to the bracket keys.  I usually hit "z" then zoom in all the way with the bracket key then use the arrow keys to move my head position so that the 32 is at the bottom of the screen.   Also it give you the option to move your head postion to max zoom to see that pesky M4 sitting in the trees shooting at you.  You can then back off with the down arrow key and start ranging! :salute

Make sure you put the trans in neutral, less vehicle bounce, and gun deviation from shot to shot...

Always face front, hull and turret...

Use zoom, and the page up and down, to slide your gunsite vertically, and controll your sight picture...

Remember your last shots point of aim, (because the gun will not return to the same spot..) Before you adjust for the next shot...

I love doing that, from so far away that they can't even see you... They run around in circles looking for the spawn camper,
But you are still on the Vbase, hittin'em at 7K.... :aok

Climb a tall hill and snipe away.  If you get high enough they can't elevate their guns enough to shoot back.

Just move the head position back so you can see your 3200 yard pin like Stroker said (Thanks for the tip Stroke). Then you can see the bottom pin without unzooming any.

My favorite thing is long range tank battles or the hide and seek ones in the forest.  But I'll take a 2500+ tank shoot out anytime!!

The same way the do it in real life.

chuck a round downrange.

If it's short, add another 400 meters to the range.
Fire again.
If it's short again, add another 400 meters.
Fire again.
If it's long, drop 300 meters.
If it's short, Add 200.
Long.  Drop 100.

Boom now you for sure and certain have the approximate range. It's now just a matter of fine-tuning for the precise hit.
(This is for ranges in excess of 3200 Meters, anything shorter and you should be able to easily fine-tune and hit within 1-2 shots with the sights and some good practice.  Tank Town map with a Panzer 4.  You'll get lots of got practice in and you'll eventually rack up a decent amount of perks to spend on those spinners for your Tiger.)

And really, practice practice practice with the stadia (Is that how it's spelled?) lines.  The lines on the side help you determine correct lead on a moving vehicle, and the only thing to help you get your first hit right on target is to practice enough to know the size of the icon in relation to the lines.

With a good gunner, a Panzer can knock out any tank out to 3200M if you can get the first few shots on target.  Mostly just the first shot.
I don't think I've gotten further than 5-6K with the Tiger, but far enough out to literally see the enraged targets coming a mile away.

7K is a guess, because the target is COMPLETELY off the range scale, FAR off!!!
But the 3K+ stadia, won't get the shell 1/2 way to the target...
So my best guess is about 7K....

Hoffman is right, chuck a shell out there, or two at that range...
When ya hit in his area, readjust your gunsight reticle, so you have reference point...
Because the range scale means doodlysquat at that distance...
It's just Kentucky Windage, pure and simple!!!

Then adjust....

But remember your point of aim for the previous shot... Before you adjust...
Because the gun won't return to the exact same position after it is fired...
Thats why some guys, shoot over and under constantly, while Im gettin hits on them...

Long range duels between groups of tanks is a ton of fun...
Some GOOD shooters out there too, so watch your azz...

not sure if this is what the OP means but over 3k I use the pgup/pgdn (cant remember which) so I can see the rounds landing, then just use the range as usual. of course the 2k mark is no longer 2k but you still have a reference to aim with. :)
