Ive been right there. Its pretty scarey stuff to see one of these guys and know he would kill you just because of the color of your skin. That article only covers one part of the story of course. Its not just about independance. It is true the philippines are full of corruption. What kind of rule do you think these guys would force upon the region of Mindanao? Id bet 30% would be killed outright. These same guys finance raids into tourist areas of the phils. They blow up bombs in the malls. They behead missionaries. Mindanao isnt safe. Make sure if you go there (and the U.S. Embassy will tell you NOT to) meet the provincial General and make sure he grants you a permit for automatic weapons and pay for an escort of armed guards. I recommend you listen to the embassy.
