AVA Main Arena
« on: August 22, 2008, 07:04:02 PM »
I know there is the Axis vs Allied arena, where certain past RL situations/battles are often recreated, but i think it would be nice to have an AvA late war main arena where one could join either side and then be able to battle oposing machines of the time all the time.

Same rules as main arenas now but each side would be restricted to either axis or allied planes.

A big problem here is that the axis side doesn't have any heavy bombers.  The allies have the B24, B17 and the Lanc.  HTC chose to model all 3 of those before the Do-217, JU-188 (more of a medium bomber), or even the HE-177.  That being the case, there's a lot of work to be done to fill out the planeset before an axis-allied main arena can be contemplated (where are the russian aircraft?).

That's easy to fix. We can make "ALLY" building easier to destroy. Like the FH takes 2.5K kg for regular, we can reduce it for ally side to just 1K, so that an 190F8 can take it down with all rockets etc? or a 110 can. Wouldn't it make more sense for JU-88 to take it down if it's easier like that? I mean I'm just trying to see how we can try to balance it out and make it work.

Fwiw, when warbirds implemented an axis/allies main arena concept the community had a meltdown.  The two sides were simply nasty toward each other and lacked the maturity to behave like adults.  Let's keep in mind that just because an arena is axis/allies, that's not even close to sufficient for making it historical.

would love to toast the luftwaffe planes on a daily basis with a warm serving of hispano.

Facts are the planeset would need a hard look at to bolster Axis rides to make it fairer, then there will be a large number imbalance due to majority of people flying Allied rides.

The ENY would constantly be in force and you'll end up with decent anti - horde guys flying uber K4's and 190D's against lemming early-mid war allied planes.   In fact on second thoughts i think it could be EPIC.   A constant scenario in one main arena I would find fresh and challenging.  Without the third team milking/ double teaming will be reduced  IMO.

I doubt this setup would be everyones cup of tea though otherwise the current axis vs allies arena would have MANY more players in it   ;)

Wonder who stop you from flying in AvA arena so you want second one.
IMHO, numbers say very clear, vast majority of players dont want country based planes restricton. Not to mention a whole new level of balance\ENY\"winwarmentality"\etc whines it would brought up.

People don't fly in that arena, one because players never know whats going on, second its always restricted to just a hand full of planes for each side.  My proposal is to have all planes enabled for each side, obviously we would need to have some balance because yes the allies have better bombers and a few more planes, but with some minor tweaks like with building resistance and gv vehicles it could be a very fair and fun arena.  Yet not totally historical at least it would give some since of historical play with an arcade touch!  :D   Right now its just too bland and confusing, plus why leave it alone, it needs help more like its failing as is, noone hardly ever plays in it.

When the P-51D is in the AvA, it gets plenty of traffic.  Funny, huh?  Same goes for the other popular late war rides.  If they're not enabled, the AvA goes quiet.  The sluggishness of the AvA has a lot more to do with the playerbase only wanting to fly late-war aircraft than with any unhappiness over restricted planesets in general.

The other issue the AvA has are the maps; they're wayyyyyy toooooooo biiiiiiiiiig.

Very true!  IMO I just think the AVA needs a face lift.  Some type of more casual feel to it, but still able to provide some type of a historical presence.  Even when some late war planes are available you don't find a whole lot of action because like you said the maps are entirely too big for the population and if a player can't find his/her ride he/she is more than likely going elsewhere to fly/drive.
