Do I have a retirement ceremony or not?
« on: August 22, 2008, 07:54:13 PM »
I am up in the air about whether or not I should have a retirement ceremony.  I have been in the Air Force over 23 years and really don't want to have one.  I was thinking more along the lines of a bbq at the park or something like...really informal.  Lord knows how many Ive been forced to attend.

My big question is did anyone out there not have one and then come to regret it ?

thanks

I didn't have one. You only have one chance. Do it and enjoy it. Years from now you'll be glad you did.
Thank you for your service, congratulations on your retirement.

Go with the informal bbq idea as the format. Having a last gathering with your fellow troops is a good way to go out. This way you have a chance to have a party and serve the same function as the traditional retirement ceremony.
DEFINITION OF A VETERAN
A Veteran - whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve - is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a check made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of "up to and including my life."

I would say if your fellows and ladies enjoyed working with you, respect you, and will miss you, then you should give them the opportunity to send you off with regards.

In any event a bbq is completely in order, for your own pleasure of course :)

Thank you for your service to this wonderful country in the United States Air Force <S>!

For you Sir:

Off we go into the wild blue yonder,
Climbing high into the sun;
Here they come zooming to meet our thunder,
At 'em boys, Give 'er the gun! (Give 'er the gun now!)
Down we dive, spouting our flame from under,
Off with one heckuva roar!
We live in fame or go down in flame.
Hey! Nothing'll stop the U.S. Air Force!

Minds of men fashioned a crate of thunder
Sent it high into the blue
Hands of men blasted the world asunder,
How they lived God only knew!
Souls of men dreaming of skies to conquer
Gave us wings ever to soar,
With scouts before and bombers galore, Hey!
Nothing'll stop the US Air Force!

Here's a toast to the host of those
Who love the vastness of the sky,
To a friend we send a message
Of his brother men who fly.
We drink to those who gave their all of old,
Then down we roar
to score the rainbow's pot of gold.
A toast to the host of men we boast, the US Air Force.

Zoom!

Off we go into the wild sky yonder,
Keep the wings level and true!
If you'd live to be a grey-haired wonder,
Keep your nose out of the blue! (Out of the blue, boy!)
Flying men guarding the nation's border,
We'll be there, followed by more,
In echelon we carry on! Hey!
Nothing'll stop the US Air Force!   :D

I had a very informal one, just my boss, the base commander, and my wife, didn't regret it.

A grizzled old sergeant once complained that when he 'retired', we'd all piss on his grave...

....a baseless worry, really; since we'd already all sworn a sacred oath that once we got outta that chicken outfit, none of us would stand in line for anything ever again.

;)

Do it. You'll not regret it; some things are just worth standing in line for.

Congrats on your retirement... and thanks for your service!

I had a small retirement party, friends, coworkers at the Rod and Gun Club... lots of fun, beer, stories, and fun... laughed a little, cried a little, drank a lot...Chief gave me one of his "coins" best retirement gift I could have got,  we closed the place down... 10 years later, wouldnt do anything diffrent.

:salute good luck on your next career

I had a small one that just included the base commander and some close co-workers.  Was over in an hour and I was on my way out the door!  I didn't regret keeping it small....regretted retiring  :cry  It didn't take long at all for me to miss the job, the people and the experiences.  Find something to keep you busy as soon as you go out that gate or you will find yourself depressed!
