friendly fire incidents
« on: August 23, 2008, 12:37:49 AM »
I saw some of this tonight, so I am making this post in an effort to be proactive.

IMO, there are basically three different types of Friendly Fire (FF).

The Congo line: where 2 or more AC are chasing one or two Bandits that are trying to run. Plane two or three fires at a bandit has plane one pulls in front of them.

in this case the #1 plane has the shot, if you are going to fire from behind him then it is your responsibility to make sure you are not going to hit the leading plane.

The furball: AC flying all over, cutting in front of each other, ect.

A tricky situation at best, all I can say here is watch your lines of fire, don't "spray and pray", make your shots from close rang and keep the burst short, that will minimize the amount of FF.

Intentional

This will get you removed from FSO.

FF is going to happen, it is a fact of life. If you are guilty, be apologetic, and try to understand how the other guy must feel. Expect to get yelled at, at the beginning, but if you respond correctly that should calm the situation quickly.

If you are the victim of FF, it is understandable to be upset, but try to remember it is only a matter of time before you do it to someone else. If the other guy apologizes, and feels bad, there is not much more that can be done. Remember, when you do it, you are going to want the other guy to cut you some slack.

A squad mate getting on range channel and cussing people out, is not going to help, and will most likely get that person ejected.

Of course FF has been an issue in the FSO from the on set.  There are a few thing's CO's can do to prevent incident's that may look bad for a squad.

(1) First and most important of all make sure that any "walk-ons" know how it work's.  We all know this isn't the MA but some times a first timer does not get it right off.

(2) Second off get a feel for the "loose cannon's" or "trouble maker's" and either keep a leash on them or don't let them fly.  An LTown type player will never fly with our squad just for this reason.

(3) This is just advise here :)  Drop any un wanted ord well away from the runway.  Years ago I was in a KI61 and was ordered to drop ord on the runway... when I did I didn't have the egg's selected & shot a bunch of 20mm's down the runway.  That was horrible!

As for the FF that happens in a furball it happens very often but IMHO it should.  It is part of the charm or difference between the MA & the FSO.  The longer a pilot fly's the FSO the more they learn to avoid FF.

Now if you do have a FF issue in the FSO normally it's handled within the squad due to the nature of the event.  I have a guy I scored a kill on about two years ago on my squad and I still can't live it down :)  I feel that's the way to handle it.

We had an incident just like that a year or so ago when a squady manged to kill two-thirds of the squad by launching with his finger on the trigger.

In a situation like that, would it be OK for the 'killed' pilots to re-up?

Yes.
There must also be a flyable computer available for Nefarious to do FSO. So he doesn't keep talking about it for eight and a half hours on Friday night!

Sled I was at the center of the incident last night! I spotted a low f6 running east with kenny40 tracking him and obviously losing ground, I also saw you and figured you had no initial angle on him, I nosed down and closed, I also told kenny I was gonna catch him, I pulled behind this f6 at about 600 yds, still closing took a couple short bursts at him and he started jinkin heavily, I had about 20 rnds of cannon when I dove in so I was waitin for the mistake to seal the deal. The heavy stick stirring allowed you and kenny to close, at 400 yds I took another shot, scoring some hits, at 200 he put on the brakes and went negative I got a burst that flames him and immediatly took hits from my 6. looking at the logs you and kenny both had assist on him when I was clearly the shooter! With no other threat around I assumed I had the run on him, For me it wasn't that big of a deal, although I did lose an aileron "which could have affected me later in the frame had we got heavily engaged again" but this wasn't the case and is why I told kenny it wasn't that big of a deal to me!! As far as JAM goes, he joined my plane after he was shot down, and was rather sensative to FF as he was shot down last week by friendly. He was telling me you guys had fired and it got in his craw pretty quick! he was settled down and I believe no harm was done! These things happen with an bellybutton load of competative folks around!! So all is well and  < SALUTE >   :salute

I don't want to speak for sled, but we discussed this and he also was talking to kenny just as a preventative medicine type of thing. Letting Kenny know to apologize, etc, that it's usually okay if unintentional.

However I think he looked it up at some time and found that Kenny didn't shoot your aileron off. Landed just 1 hit or something, no damage. I could be remembering wrong, but wanted to put your mind at ease on that.

The CM's are aware that this stuff will happen.  More over they are not out to screw over anyone.  Of course they will let you re-up.

On the other hand this kind of stuff play's hell with scoring an event.

Yes in that situation the CMs would allow reups.

As pointed out we have 3 types of friendly fire incidents:

  • Somebody testing guns during spawn and blasting his buddies accidentally. In that case you can reup since we clearly state in the rules that you can reup up until T+15 as long as you take no damage from enemy forces. However, as pointed out PLEASE, PLEASE do your best to not frag each other on spawn and launch. It makes going through the logs a pain for us admins. This should be a rarity and not anything people do for giggles.
  • During a furball and hot pursuit while engaged with the enemy. If you frag a friendly here that is for that person, no reup. Also your side will lose points for that plane. I have always scored these friendly fire incidents. There is and needs to be a cost associated with accidentally shooting down friendlies during legitimate combat.
  • Killing a friendly on purpose. This has happened in the past and when confirmed usually results in the harshest penalty of suspension from FSO for a set period of time. An accident and sloppy gun work is something .. purposefully fragging is another.

Actually that is a Forth one, good call GD.
