Jug pilots, advice?
« on: August 26, 2008, 12:13:39 AM »
Okay I'm converted to the p47 now. I've started a new squadron ( 368th FG ) which was primary a ground attack squadron in the PTO. Anyhow I'm commencing training later on this week and i'll be training till we become cohesive which comes from constantly flying with one another.

Anyone to the point, does anyone have some tips that i could use to help train my squaddies in high alt escorting? I've hosted plenty of missions and I've had the pleasure of leading a couple of escort flights at times but I'm kinda behind in my Bomber escort role since i came back, thanks guys!   :salute

Well I'm not a Jug pilot, but I did happen to have a great little fight against one down on the deck tonight in a rare 1 vs 1. He Turned and Burned with it real well in a fight at almost stall speeds with me in my K4 just above the trees. The film will at least show you that a Jug is quite capable of turning on the deck.  :)

The film is here if you want to check it out.

For high altitude training there is no better place to train than at the 30K bases in the Traing Arena. I think A3 is the Bishop 30K Base.
If you are truely serious about training at for High Altitude Bomber Escort, this is where I would take my Squad to learn to fly at that altitude.

Just some thoughts...good luck, and welcome back!

Might as well stop eating meat and convert to limestone.

Like most birds in the game the jug is a great ride in the right hands. It can turn better then most pepole think, and like all American birds good E management is a must.It comes with a ton of 50 Cal's so being a great shot is not a must.

I take the 8 50's with 267 rds per gun, and utilize your high speed flaps. Kill em quick. LIke a spit for instance. It holds its E very too well while the jug dumps it very good. I fly usually around 10-12k, and use a notch of flaps and a lead turn for the merge to get a quick shot after the 1st turn, or an adv. if they start TnBn wit ya. If they take it vertical, and you know you're not gonna get em, dive out. Use your roll to get them in rolling scissors. :salute and good luck with it. Jugs rule  :D  :rock

Also had a short 1v1 with strafing's K4 the other day, was fun. :salute

i actually did fairly well against a p38 in the jug a few days ago. i noticed it feels super sluggish though, below about 225 or so.
i ran out of gas after the initial merge, but had some alt to play with, so i kept the majority of my turns nose low, and pitched above the horizon once or twice for a shot. i got a couple rounds in him, and then he augered. it didn't look like i took anything important off of his plane, but rather i think he hadn't realized  how low we had gotten. i ditched immediatly afterwards. this may make me try to learn it.

I've flown em quite a bit....E managment is a must...and flaps as well when in the weeds. Throttle managment is crucial when down low.

All I can say with certainty is it is a blast to fly. One of my favorites in the game.

I'm not good at it....so look up Nomde...Frenchy...BluKitty... Hajo...Mak...BatfinkV....

These guys and gal are very good in the jug.

P-47D11 and D40 are the best jugs IMO.

From what I've gone through, the P-47D11 is the toughest out of all of them. So if you plan to TnB, use the D11. I've been able to keep up a P-47D25 with a Spit 8 and a Spit 16 quite a few times, just make sure you always stay on the offense and never let them get on your tail. I guarantee you, they'll stay glued to ya unless you dive away or catch them off guard.  :aok

You're wrong there my friend. Especailly when you say against bombers. I prefer Jugs over any other plane to bomber hunt. When it comes to fighting, it can out turn a P-51 w/ flaps and in the right hands, out turn many spits.

Just remember, when escorting, all you really need to do is chase the bogies away and return to position.

Also, engage wisely - meaning if you ave, say, 4 jugs escorting, maybe you only need only to send 1 or 2 to deal with an impending threat, not all 4...  as escorts your priority is getting buffs on target, not kills for yourselves.
Surrounded by suck and underwhelmed with mediocrity.
I'm always right, it just takes some poepl longer to come to that realization than others.
I'm not perfect, but I am closer to it than you are.
