St. John's. Any Newfie's play Aces High?
« on: August 26, 2008, 04:50:55 PM »
We had a trip go up there with the intention of staying one night and leaving the next morning.  As luck would have it we had a leaky brake fitting which left us AOG and a long way from parts.  Our first impressions of Newfoundland as we descended toward St. Johns were how incredible the sights were.  Dramatic cliffs, thousands of lakes and miles of coastline.  Green as far as you could see and I took a few shots coming in and passed the camera to the other guy so he could take photos out off of our right as we approached the airport.

Once we landed we were driven Downtown by way of stopping at Signal Hill for the view.  The first transoceanic radio station was set up here and you can get tours of the castle looking building by a lovely lady dressed as a soldier.  There are miles of trails to walk with breathtaking views in every direction.

The night life is incredible as well.  George Street in downtown St. John's has the highest concentration of pubs per square foot in North America and there's no shortage of live music to be had.  We hit more pubs than I can count and again there was no shortage of live talent playing most genres of music.  We ate twice at a resturaunt called "The Keg" which served incredible steak and crab legs.  Moreover everywhere we went each and every person we met was extremely nice.  Whether it was host/hostess staff, people on the street, other pub goers and tourists.  Everyone was polite and there is almost no crime to speak of on the island.  We left with a wonderful impression of Newfie life.  Our first night there we were Screeched In as honorary Newfoundlanders and we truly enjoyed ourselves during our unexpected extended stay in St. John's.

Thanks Newfies!!!  Free NFLD!

And lets not forget some local talent.  Jenn my "tour guide" for a couple days.

The Keg is a Canadian chain restaurant, being around for close to 40 years.

In 1971, Vancouver entrepreneur George Tidball founded The Keg Steakhouse & Bar in North Vancouver, Canada. From the beginning, the unique concept of combining great food, superior service, and a comfortable atmosphere proved enormously successful. This winning formula allowed The Keg Steakhouse & Bar to grow quickly into new Canadian and US markets, which today total more than 90 locations across North America.

Have one just down the road from me, so if you ever get stuck in Ottawa, it is a couple miles from the airport (YOW). It is next door to a hotel so you can (stagger ;)) back to your room.

This is the only picture I have of me in it.  Taken by some airplane enthusiast when we were going into Philadelphia in early June.  A buddy recognized the tail number and sent me a copy  :aok

We're hoping it turns into a Falcon 2000EX EASy, Falcon 50EX, Challenger 300 or Gulfstream G150 within the next year... :pray

Nice Golfer

In the 70's I remember the nights in bed with the Flying magazine open to a picture of the Lears.......... Dreaming.

Could Never afford one although a Cessna 500 LW SP or any turbo prop is just within my reach maybe someday I will be able to justify it. Either that or I will settle for a Mooney or Cessna 340.
