DOD Source is still fun once in a while.

I think there are still some old servers running the old DOD Versions, just not through Steam.

Day of Defeat, IIRC. Half-Life 1 mod.
Ron White says you can't fix stupid. I beg to differ. Stupid will usually sort itself out, it's just a matter of making sure you're not close enough to become collateral damage.

Wow, didn't realize other people on here really played it.  I played the game competitively from about 2002-2005/6 (i.e. leagues) and I played it since beta 1.1, early 2001.  I quit pretty much after source killed the competitive scene.  There was a lot of promise in source, but the vast majority of league players rejected it.  I was amazed to learn that people still played the retail version of dod (HL1 version) yet in CAL (www.caleague.com).  I was a CAL admin for about yet as well.

I played it a couple weeks ago for the first time in about 2-3 years.  Anyone wants to pub it, hit me up!  No source cuz source is bad.  A lot of people say 1.3b was the best version, but for league play, 3.1 was by far the best.

I also made several dod movies throughout the years.  I also keep screenshots from matches still, all the way back to 2003.  And I still have the installs from beta 1.1 up to 3.1 and retail.  I wasted a lot of my life on that game.  So many memories *tear.

Neg, regular DoD is available on Steam.  WON finally closed down a couple years ago IIRC.

The game went downhill once they removed the MG-34. A lot of the new maps in Source are way better, and the Avalanche grenade bug was fixed for it, which is really nice.

When did they remove the MG34?  I thought it was in source?  It didn't really matter since the MG42 was far superior.  MG's were pretty dumb in the game IMO, but then again, no one used them really in league matches, that was about run and gun.

Rainbow six: Rogue spear- simply awesome.

The 34 & semi-auto sniper rifle both went bye-bye in Source. Now class limits are on pretty much every server, so there's only ever 2 .30s and 2 mg42s in play at any given time (not bad, but I'd argue the 42 is far superior to the .30). They removed the US carbine class and put the carbine on the bazooka class instead of a pistol (sucks). Regular grenades were removed from the riflemen and switched out with RPGs (fuuun). A lot of stuff is still pretty much the same. It's still rare to see an MG in a league match, but some people are godlike with it. If you displace constantly, know lots of clever ledges to camp out on, you can be pretty damn successful with it. There's a spot on Avalanche where I can hold the Axis flag 2 pretty much forever from as long as the church is properly held. I still prefer the standard riflemen class myself though.

Source's lack of accuracy and decreased weapon damage (almost like CS) were the complaints of many from the league community.  DoD died the day the 1 shot Kar98 kill went away.

1 shot kills are still there. Doesn't even require a headshot. I'm not anywhere near my skill level when I played league, but I haven't noticed any accuracy differences. You can stand in the middle of most maps just strafing back and forth one-shotting guys all day. The only real problem is the extra horsepower the hl2 engine needs that can make peoples PC's crap their pants when a bunch of smoke grenades are flopped down, or in CS a rain of flashbangs comes rolling in.

I know the accuracy isn't there.  The 1 shot kills are there, the offensive 'standard' for the axis was the kar98.  Without the 100% 1 shot kill kar, this small change had a large impact on league play.  What attracted many players to dod was it's faster pace than other WW2 FPS games, but with each new version the game was slowed down and eventually morphed into COD/MOH more or less.  It's distinction was no longer there.  I played DoD over COD etc because of the speed of play, it really wasn't a 'realism' game, but that's what Valve wanted more of.  When source came out I tried to transition to league play in dod:s, but I'd say about 75% of the old league players dropped the game because the damage/accuracy models.  There's a whole slew of other things we could get into, but this thread is about old school dod :)

I'd rather not discuss source as it has too many bad memories for me.

I'll upload my old dod movies if I remember tonight.

Rainbow 6 up until about 2002 was kick butt. I too wasted a ton of late nights on it and it nearly cost me my marriage along with AH.
