I have been to Kwaj several times and seen her up close.  You pass her as you pull into the pier inside the atoll.  Kinda strange to see a German ship sunk in the south pacific.

I'm coming late to this thread, but I had it pegged as a cruiser because of its size, relative to the trees visible on the shoreline in the lower left corner of the picture. Also, I could not remember an instance of a battleship being sunk in shallow water during the war, except for the Tirpitz, which sank in a fjord.

When were you at Kwaj? I was there in '62 and '63.  I was 11 and 12 at the time. Our family lived there for 2 years (my Dad worked for Bell Labs). I got to see a few ICBM intercepts, and even an over-the-horizon H-Bomb shot at Bikini. It was a great place to be as a kid.
