Given the circumstances, I'd say it was unavoidable/necessary.  However I don't think any war is good.

As a few have already said, war isn't good, but it sure as hell is a nice catalyst for positive things.  Sure, I would have loved it if some sniper knocked off Hitler at one of his pre-war rallies, but good things came about from the entire war, it's just that the circumstances in which they came of age wasn't the greatest.

War is never a good thing, I view that as an altruism...

But sometimes good things do come out of war... Like it or not...

Such as:
End of worldwide colonial empire...
End of an 1800yo european civil war...
Technology that expands mankinds knowledge and capabilities..
etc, etc...

All human beings have a dark urge to posess
that which someone else has... Since the caveman days...

Most of us, can control that urge... Or it is culturally suppressed as a whole...

But ANY of us, in a certain situation, can revert to our savage selves..

Just a fact...

I think the phrase you're looking for is "universal truth," but you've already said as much when you say that war is never a good thing.

P.S. WW1 did far more to change the map and European civilization than WW2.
