I beg to difer. I went to a private high school where abstinence was taught. During my time there not one girl ended up pregnant. The church my mom drug us to every sunday morning also taught abstinence and yet not one girl ended up pregnant during the 12 or so years we went there. Abstinence does work for those that adhere to it. It is incredibly difficult to become pregnant if you never have sex.

Welp, here are a few facts I ran across a couple of weeks back that deal with teenage pregnancy.

Prior to the 1960s, the rate of illegitimate pregnancies for unmarried black girls was around 20%, while the rate for white girls of the same age was in the low single digits.

Enter the sexual revolution, with its notions of free sex, free love, sex education, free condoms, and contempt for the old moral beliefs and sexual mores.  Sex is everywhere, in books, magazines, radio, tv, and popular novels.  Our kids are inundated with it.  End result, pregnancy rates for unwed teenage girls have skyrocketed:  the 20% rate for unwed black girls is now at 70%, and that of unwed white girls is at 20%.

Crockett, while you may laugh at the teaching of abstinence, it at least harkens back to a time when such religious based sexual behaviors actually worked.  The more "modern" approach that you advocate has been an unmitigated disaster.

Southern states seem to have higher birth rates than northern ones. That could be a function of ethnic population distribution though.

I can't find one single reference to back up Crockett's previous statement about the lower population more religious area's have the highest birth rates among teens. In fact, religion isn't mentioned at all, and neither is population density.

First she was a hypocrite until you were shown you don't really know what that means, then she was wrong until you were shown that because a child doesn't follow a teaching it does not intrinsically mean the teaching is wrong and now it is ironic.

Would it have been ironic if Palin was in full support of explicit sex ed in the schools and this child got pregnant? There's your test. If you can flip it to the other side of your argument and it would still be true you have a case.

That's exactly where it should be taught. My wife has already had the *talk* with our oldest daughter, she knows how babies are made and how to prevent them. We'll see how she turns out.

My son was living with his mother and went through sex-ed classes, he got a girl pregnant while still a teen. (No one had the *talk* with him, it was left to the sex-ed classes)
