scores, and how they really look....
« on: September 02, 2008, 06:31:06 PM »
I have one fighter sortie this afternoon, and I did not realize that this was the first sortie of the tour.

here is how it went down....

Late War Tour 104 Fighter Scores for SkyRock

Kills per Death + 1 5.00 0
Kills per Sortie 5.00 0
Kills per Hour of Flight 10.44 0
Kills Hit Percentage 2.50 0
Kill Points 279.87 0

This was a true fighter sortie with 3 1 vs 1's and 1 2 vs 2.  I was in a F4U-1 and the planes I killed were in order....
spit-8
n1k2
spit16

n1k2
hurri-1  (these last two I killed as PanosGR kinda buzzed them, but I was stall fighting them both at the time.)

all were stall turn fights, that took everything I could muster to get shots on and you will notice that on my score.  look at hit%, this is how my hit percentage would look if every fight were a stall fight where you have to put some lead out there to get hits.(stall gunnery, nose bounce, trying pull guns on tighter turning plane, trying to hit n1k2 as he tried to extend to get him to stay in fight, and so on.)

Discuss.

PS  the last one was SF3 in a hurri-1 and I went for it, luckily somewhere in the rolling stalls he stalled out, although I did manage hits on him the pass before.  <S> sf3

Mark,

An awful lot of "aces" can go a whole tour without a "real" fight...and there are a lot of guys with "pitiful" scores that can flat out fly the snot out of most or even all the planes here. I think thats why so many of us roll our eyes when "score" is mentioned. After all its the fight in the dog, not the score in the potato {ends in "oar" and starts with "wh"at} that counts :aok :D

this was kinda my statement.  :devil

I'd trade 50 sorties with higher score if no actual fighting was done for one sortie like this one. :aok

I will comment on the hit % aspect because that is my "thing". I've noticed by watching films of myself, past and present, that my hit % actually went up when TnB'ing, especially with a MG package, unless I happened to gank a lot of buffs in my cannon equipped E birds. I wondered why this would be so, then I realized why after some investigation. In a high speed pass with cannons on a fighter only a relatively small % of the rounds actually hit and the plane usually went down from catastrophic loss of a wing or the tail. When I TnB'd however, the majority blew up completely because once I got "saddled" I'd pour 6 X 50s into him until he exploded, so a much higher % and volume of fire were hitting from very close range.

I do this for a few reasons:

A) So I don't collide with the fuselage.
B) To make sure I get the kill even if a Niki tickled him with some 20mms ten minutes ago.
C) With a bazillion MG rounds ammo conservation isn't really a factor, so it's better to make damn sure than pull off a bandit and have to get back on him to finish him which would put myself at more risk of being cherried or KS'd.

Obviously, not all fights or opponents will afford the opportunity to really "fill in" the guy with a long burst at close range (or multiple short pulls). But, those that do will jack that hit % right up there.
