Sorry but... Puffy Ack Question:
« on: September 05, 2008, 11:49:42 AM »
Besides the well known habit of shooting at fighters instead of bombers in the same area, why does puffy ack single out or pick on one pilot only?  This has happened to me and it's happened to others as well.  For example, in a fight near a cv the puffy singles out one fighter in particular, he dives below 3k, and so the puffy ack targets someone else.  But as soon as that previous fighter comes up above 3k, the puffy ack goes for him again, even if other pilots are closer and above 3k.

Nevermind accuracy, this puffy ack behavior needs adjustment.

Hello Anaxogoras,

I thought I was the only one that experiences this odd "CV puffy Love".  Maybe it has something to do with the skin you are using?  If someone has a better idea let me know... :noid

At a guess, could it be to do with plane type?  You said it tends to single out fighters...

Alternatively, it might be something like alphabetical order of pilot name.

EDIT: It would be interesting to do an experiment with this.

I believe each plane has an imaginary box around it that the ack actually hits.  I think they are different for each plane.

I believe the ack hits the plane that is closer to the guns.

A year back when H2H was still around I found that everyone was getting shot at by the AA. I simply didn't see the AA firing at others around me.

I frequently see puffy ack firing at other players.

A CV puffy ack took me out 3 times today.  Every time I was around 11 to 14k.  But yes, the ack will shift fire from one bogey (that was lower than me) and when that threat was down, it reacquired me as the target.

Same as ack on the fields........ first to be in range are usually fighters not waiting behind for bombers.

There is nothing odd about puffy code according to HTC.

What you should do is record a sequence with multiple planes ib to the cv and see which one comes into range first and then track the puffy.

I've never tried it though.

the puffy gets lock on a single plane and thats it until you're out of range or below 3k. pop up or back into range and its on you again. totally unrealistic for WWII and more importantly does not encourage air to air combat. evasives dont seem to make any difference (although I haven't tested it properly.) i'm sure the code is fine, its the model which is wrong.

edit: its completely different from the field ack model - that just targets the nearest plane to each gun, looks like its delayed but thats just the guns turning to target. I suspect this is the problem with the puffy model - if 5" did the same they would spend all their time acquiring new targets and not firing.

Does anyone know how far out from a CV (or perhaps any puffy ack 'emplacement') you have to be before it targets you?

What I don't get is it will fire at you no matter where you go, until below 3K or out of range, yet friendlies fly freely, closer to the CV and well above 3K, whilst you still take ack.

Ahhhhh.... That does make half sense.  But what if it has locked a new target?  Will it disengage to re-engage?

edit: its completely different from the field ack model - that just targets the nearest plane to each gun, looks like its delayed but thats just the guns turning to target. I suspect this is the problem with the puffy model - if 5" did the same they would spend all their time acquiring new targets and not firing.
