C-47 near Chicago
« on: September 07, 2008, 10:58:12 PM »
So today me and my girlfriend were heading downtown and about 5 miles from my house I see this plane in the sky and it looked low, I live about 30 miles from O'hare so I thought it was just a jet that was low, but I had never seen one on this flight path, so as we were getting onto the highway(The Elgin O'Hare) all of a sudden it's flying right over top of us about 1000 ft up and it's a C-47, I was like holy **** it's a goon, he was flying in a long circle for as long as I could see him, now there are 2 small airports near my house so I'm guessing that it had come out of one of them, when we came back about an hour later it was still flying over head, I'm guessing that it was at one of the small airports giving rides or something because I've never seen it here before.  It was really cool to see one of those flying right over your head, it had the white & black strips on it.

So did anyone else that lives near here see it today, or know what it was doing here, when I saw it it was right by the Schaumburg Flyers field.

Coincidentally there's a C-47 based at my local airport for a Geophysical survey at the moment. However it's a Basler turbine conversion so it's very weird to see a C-47 sounding like a turboprop. It's currently flying around the Irish countryside at about 300 feet scaring the hell out of the yokels. :lol

It's great to see the old Goon still flying and still earning a living.

I live in Schaumburg, and about 3 miles from Schaumburg Airport.  They had an Airshow this weekend there.  With Airplane/helicopter rides, also some air stunts. :aok

I was looking forward to going but I had to go to a Stupid Bridal expo with My finencee. :furious

One of them used to be a regular over the house, but is now a more of a museum piece. Flyable though and was flown to Duxford some years ago...from Iceland.
Anyway,got vandalized last night....bloody graffity!!!!

It was very interesting to carry out the flight trials at Rechlin with the Spitfire and the Hurricane. Both types are very simple to fly compared to our aircraft, and childishly easy to take-off and land. (Werner Mölders)

I hope that whoever is in charge of maintenance thoroughly checks that plane over to make sure the chavs didn't damage anything else.
Afk for a year or so.  The name of a gun turret in game.  Falanx, huh?

Interesting parallel to see the pitchfork in that graffiti all the way over there, Angus.  That's standard signage for the Folks and Gangster Disciples street gangs, largely based in Chicago.

If you do some digging you'll find that most tagging isn't gang related so much as copycat and trends found on the internet.

Otherwise you'd be led to believe that 4 or 5 gangs stretch all the way from LA to Chicago to Ireland to Tokyo which is simply not true.

Done plenty of training and research.  My point was that the thread was started about a Chicago area plane, then Angus popped in and...
Ah, nevermind bongboy.

Thank you for this. I will forward that one to the people/society related to the aircraft.
Do they do any more than just common vandalism?

Ah, nevermind bongboy.

Sorry to derail the convo.  And I'm by no means sanctioning the act.  I just doubt that getting a crack team of international gang experts isn't going to lead anywhere.

You said that this was at Duxford?

I'm no expert on graffiti, but please ask them to check the rest of the aeroplane before flying it again.

We have a C-54 that took part in late WW2 and was the famous "Candy Bomber" during the Berlin Airlift that would drop hundreds of Hershey Bars on little homemade parachutes for the kids! We have a fly in every year at my local airport and it flew low over the taxi way and ramp and droped candy for the crowd! We aslo have a AT-6, and a B-17 flys in ever september, I have also seen a C-130 low over town and Apache attack helicopter parked on the ramp. dont no where it came from tho lol!, and the only military we have close is Army National Guard but they dont have aircraft are ours. the closet Air National Guard base is about 2 hours away LOL

<--the C-54 that comes to our airport.

It's odd, but for about the past 5-10 years or so, because of the number of regional airshows in the Chicago area, it's not uncommon to look up during the summer when you hear the drone and see a B-24 or B-17 or C-47 flying along. Almost not even a surprise anymore :)

I think it was last year, or the year before, I saw two at once B-17 and B-24.
