What still bugs me is if you manage to get you plane down at an airfield and end up off the runway and cant taxi back on cause eng failure, damage, no fuel, then you have "ditched" not landed and it counts as a part kill against you.

I propose if you come to a complete stop within the confines of an airbase then it shouldnt be counted as a ditch.

Why? In RL the mechanics would tow the plane back to the hangar and it gets refuelled or repaired - ie the plane wasnt ditched and left for dead, and the pilot walks of and gets a cup o' tea.

Nothing annoys me more than gliding back to ya base or nursing the fuel consumption and flyin real slow just to end up 1 meter off the end of the runway and it gets counted as a ditch. Why should i bother even trying?

And to be fair... don't permit aircraft to land successfully at vbases and ports...

I agree this has happend to me numerous times, even when one part of the plane was off the runway and me out of gas. I can only assume this happends often to other people. Please make the imediate airfield area a safe landing zone.

Well, when u talking about landings...

One thing i've wondered a long time is why u are able to land/TO everywhere. Gear shouldn't take it out of the runway.

So what i mean is that if you overshoot the landing the gear should collapse.

Crash landing out of runway should be only possible gear up or at least very hard. Now it's just the same where u land if u just end on the runway when exit.

I think open terrain outside the bases should be roughed big time. I do not mean more hills, but a lot more bumpy surface. No way anybody can land in open space except in airfields. And even there, you can easyly damage your kite if you run off the rnwy.

For the runaway landing, depends on the speed you are running when you get to the end. IMHO, collapsing landing gear and flipovers out of the rnwy should be more common.

you should of seen some of those so called airfields that FAF used during the world war 2

Compared to that, AH's pawed runway is a dream and area near that runway would be nice place to land at..

AH bases reminds me more of modern airfields.

[edit] I still believe open field landings /ditchings are too easy. Not because of the procedure itself, but for the lack of trees, rocks, creecks that make to find a landing spot difficult or ruin a perfectly executed ditch [/edit]

You should have to land on the airstrip itself for a good landing.

If you get a ditch because you are out of fuel or shot up... tough. Think of it as the flack you would have gotten from your CO and crewchief for screwing up a perfectly good plane. Take proper care of the very expensive aircraft that your country is letting you use soldier!

I do agree that the ground outside of the airfields should be a bit rougher. Inside the airfield around the runways I think it's fine though.

A lot of gras fields were used in ww2, grass the areas surrounding paved fields was typically well groomed too. I mean within the confines of the field. Some of the larger grass fields permitted takeoff and landing at practically any heading the pilot chose. Permit sussessful landings anywhere within the confines of a landing field to me makes sense.

Many WWII planes operated from grass strips and many that had the gift of finished airfields could have.

A pilot looking for a ditching spot out in the countryside would obviously not try for a field that would accelerate his demise.

Leave it alone, my opinion.

Ever get a ditch w/o ever taking off?
Got the wrong load, click tower, get ditch.
Tail wheel is just off the black.
I do not think these count though as you have not even started the mission

Many returned to the field planes ended up as writeoffs so if I miss the runway I can live with a ditch.

I do think that 1 wheel on the runway should be counted as landed though.

If the server knows I have 1 wheel off the runway, it must know 2 are on, right?
