You should have to land on the airstrip itself for a good landing.
If you get a ditch because you are out of fuel or shot up... tough. Think of it as the flack you would have gotten from your CO and crewchief for screwing up a perfectly good plane. Take proper care of the very expensive aircraft that your country is letting you use soldier!
I do agree that the ground outside of the airfields should be a bit rougher. Inside the airfield around the runways I think it's fine though.
