Killing a Pilot
« on: September 10, 2008, 03:34:05 AM »
From what I've seen, when you kill a pilot in-game, the aircraft will just explode and/or dissapear.  Instead, could a pilot death do the same thing a bail-out does in terms of the aircraft crashing to the ground?  This has always bugged me, and I'm not sure why.  It seemed pilot deaths happened enough in WWII, and you always hear them describe it as "the plane rolled over and went straight into the ground," that we could get a similar animation!  Seems to be an easy and reasonable addition to me! :aok

many folk, myself included, have brought this up before. I think it would be alot better than the explosion. But still model an explosion death from fuel tank hits maybe.
its difficult because the player is in the tower and the plane is still located in the 'air'. exploding the con makes it much easier for the game to recognise a pilot kill, or something like that.
And I don't know much, but I do know this. With a golden heart comes a rebel fist.

I think I've watched someone bail out and their plane tumbled to the ground after they had towered out.

As long as the icon disappears...."Waaaa I followed the plaine all teh way down and then I augrd waaa so I lost teh perks haxxorz!"
... missions were to be met by the commitment of alerted swarms of fighters, composed of Me 109's and Fw 190's, that were strategically based to protect industrial installations. The inferior capabilities of these fighters against the Mosquitoes made this a hopeless and uneconomical effort. 1.JD KTB

I agree. Only as long as the plane, regardless of position, starts heading for the ground. We wouldn't want someone to be shot and the plane keeps flying until it runs out of fuel. That would be a complete waste of bandwidth on the server's end.

If you look at a plane that has been bailed out of, the icon disappears, and the plane starts to roll over and heads towards earth.  Same effect could be used for a pilot death.

I like it just like it is. Its like hitting the fuel tank just right and BOOM!

I guess... but your not hitting a fuel tank, so why should it emulate it?

I guess I would prefer the proper feedback to let me know exactly how the aircraft was downed, plus it would really add some cool things to dogfights.  Imagine the pilots that were killed and watching the planes just tumble to the ground instead of just popping!  Would really add a realism aspect that would be quite neat in my opinion.

Well look at it this way then and consider it from my view point for a second. If I shoot you in the head and I have used 30 bullets when you explode then I have enough ammo to shoot a lot more planes down. If your plane sticks around and in the heat of battle I dont see right away that the plane is now in 'animated death mode' then I am going to waste a lot more ammo. Thats contrary to the current scoring system right there.

But that makes it more realistic. In real life if the pilot got killed, often enough the person who killed him didnt know he was dead. And the way the plane falls on bail out is some what obvious that there is no longer a threat. As long as the plane falls ina downward fashion.

We already suggested that when the pilot is dead the icon on his plane disappears, you receive credit for the kill, and the plane starts its, "fall-of-death," animation.

That wont matter a whole lot when you are shooting aircraft. I already have this problem when I am zoomed in for shooting and the pilot bails I never see the icon go out and its a total waste of perfectly good ammo.  :D

I think it will still be very obvious when it happens.  The icon will disappear and the plane will just start rolling limply towards the ground.  Still, the fact that the plane doesn't just disappear is a great visual and realistic addition to the game.
