78th FG P38G skin request

Capt. Harry J Dayhuff. Ogden, UT. 82nd Fighter Squadron. P-38G 42-12926. "Mackie". Mackie referred to his wife Maxine and the name was also used on his P-47. The name "Mike" appeared on the left engine cowling and "Pat" on the right. When the 78th FG first arrived in the UK in 1942 they were equipped with P-38s and based at Goxhill but these were very rapidly transferred to the 12th Air Force. Capt. Dayhuff's P-38 depicted here wears the pre-war markings of two bands for a Squadron Commander. These could be applied vertically as in this instance or diagonally. White indicates the 82nd FS. Single bands indicated flight leaders. At this time, the squadrons used the "number in series" system where HQ used 1-9; then 10-39; 40-69 and 70-99 for the three squadrons. Squadron commanders usually used the high or low number. Modellers note that the fiscal year denominator "2" is missing from the serial # on the tail.

The 78th never flew 38s in combat.  While they took 38s to England, they transitioned to 47s before they flew their first combat mission.   So not really a combat bird.  More then likely ended up in North Africa as a replacement aircraft for the 1st ,14th or 82nd FGs
