John F. Kennedy
PT-109 - we all know the story.

Lyndon B. Johnson
Requested active duty during WWII.  Was denied - eventually did some observer duty in a B-26.  He got a Silver Star, which he apparently did not deserve (not to belittle his service and willingness to serve).

Richard Nixon
Commanded supply corps in the South Pacific during WWII.

Gerald Ford
Served on the carrier USS Monterey as an athletic coachduring WWII.

Jimmy Carter
Served on the sub USS Pomfret.

Ronald Reagan
Made training movies while in the Army during WWII.

Reagan did films and such for the USAAC.

George W. Bush was in the National Guard, his unit WAS eligible for Vietnam.

All actually served, except for Clinton.

Palin did not serve. McCain of course did. Obama did not. Biden had as many or more deferments as Cheney.

Last time I checked John McCain wasn't a US president. However I wonder if the rumors are true that during his career as a pilot, he managed to crash 5 aircraft.

I am getting checked out in a single-engine USAF aircraft for the first time in my career, and I fully expect to have to jettison at least one (thereby returning it to the taxpayers in the form of de-militarized scrap) before I retire.  After being in the business for almost 14 years, slamming guys for wrecking military aircraft without knowing the full story behind each and every incident is a mark of supreme ignorance.

Palin did not serve.

http://www.hazegray.org/navhist/carriers/fires/

Quote

USS Forrestal (CVA 59), 29 July 1967
Forrestal was operating off Vietnam at the time of the fire. A Zuni rocket was accidentally launched on deck (due to an electrical problem), hitting a parked A-4, and igniting its drop tank. The fire then spread to other aircraft, and bombs began to explode on deck. The fire burned for 13 hours, killed 134 crew and caused the loss of 21 aircraft, some of which were pushed overboard before the fire reached them. 7 holes were blown in the flight deck. Repairs took 7 months, requiring complete removal and reconstruction of the aft section of the ship down to the hangar floor. This was the worst carrier fire in postwar years. The ship has carried the nickname "Forrest Fire" ever since. Films shot during the fire are still show in the course of basic training for all sailors.

Wasn'r McCain a pilot of the A-4 struck by Zuni?

LBJ was nearly shot down by Saburo Sakai.  Two B-26s were attacked by the Zero ace.  One was downed, one escaped into a cloud.  The one that escaped carried LBJ.

Just think, if Sakai had downed the other B-26, there probably wouldn't have been a Vietnam War.
