Anyone else annoyed by...
« on: September 14, 2008, 05:09:28 PM »
Anyone else annoyed by car commercials that brag about how many "MPGs" their car has?  It's like they know American car buyers are too stupid to grasp the concept of "Miles Per Gallon", but they'll surely bite since they know "MPGs" are good, and the car they're selling has a whole bunch of them.  We're not sure where those MPGs are kept in the car though... I think the factory puts the extra MPGs in the trunk or the roofliner.  We don't know what MPGs are, but more is better so instead of advertising cars as efficient or getting more Miles Per Gallon, they just say their car has more MPGs than that other car.

Selling to the dumbest customers...  Yea, that's the way to make money.  Using advertising techniques specifically aimed at selling cars to the people who have the least to spend in a down economy.  No wonder the US auto industry is in deep doo-doo.  European and Japanese cars are efficient and get great fuel economy, US cars merely have lots of MPGs added at the factory.  Maybe it's like an upscale exhaust system, or spinners on the wheels?  Who gives a crap about fuel economy, I'm gonna get this other car because they say it comes with more MPGs.

Bah.

Everyone I know, goes away, in the end.

Yep. Its why I did not buy a Prius.

Consider..

they charge you almost $8k-12k more than a vehicle of comparable size (compact-midsize sedan) for the benefit of having twice your fuel mileage.

mmm...

lets see.. it takes $40 to fill up the avg 12 gal tank with prices at almost $4/gallon
Considering my avg driving time (I cross the entire city of Orlando to get to work) I need to gas up twice a month. =$80
The prius would only need one gas since it has 'twice' the MPG rating  = $40

Gassing my car (V6) its $80X12 = $960 a year
Gassing the prius is $480 a year.

Buuuut...

to buy the prius you needed to pay $8000 bucks more than my car. So take that $8k divide by 12 = 666 a year.. $666 addl cost for the car + 480 you pay for for gas = $1146

Yeah, you're saving money with a Prius.

I'll wait until them new vehicles truly become better option than getting me a much nicer, more comfortable car.

I get about 45 MPGs with my Honda, and I ride in style.

Ignorant people can buy cars with "more MPGs".  I'll buy a car that gets more Miles Per Gallon.

Can I get a car with money that comes from an ATM machine?  All I have to do is remember my personal PIN number.

What they don't tell you is that the MPG is based off the striped down version of that model. Part all the extras on it and the MPG goes down.

Funny thing is the dealerships don't usually carry the striped down versions either.

My point was the same as yours.  That people forget what the acronym stands for.

I would expect most people know what the acronym stands for. Using machine or number is just an attempt to maintain the flow of speech. Acronyms work great written down, not so much while talking.

I wouldn't.  Otherwise people would speak good.   ;)

Acronyms are easy.

Speaking in a manner that makes it possible to use them without sounding awkward is a little bit harder.
