Nanny state or free gas?
« on: September 16, 2008, 03:42:46 PM »
Amount of gasoline consumed in the US in 2007......142 billion gallons.

http://www.eia.doe.gov/bookshelf/brochures/gasolinepricesprimer/

Amount spent ON INTEREST ALONE on the federal debt in 2007......$430 billion.

http://www.treasurydirect.gov/govt/reports/ir/ir_expense.htm

142 billion gallons of gas x $3.00 = interest paid on the federal debt

If the federal deficit disappeared tomorrow, and federal spending/revenue stayed the same, the money saved by not having to pay interest on the debt could fuel every gas-powered vehicle in the country annually.
