PCI Slot question

My new mother board ( ASUS M3A79-T Deluxe AM2+/AM2 AMD 790FX ATX AMD Motherboard ) has 4 PCI Express 2.0 x16 slots with ATI CrossFireX™ support (@ dual x16, triple x16 / x8 / x8, or quad x8 modes) and 2 PCI Slots.

My new graphics card covers one of the PCI slots. (double wide)  My ethernet card is PCI and so is my sound card.

Can I put either in a PCI Express 2.0 x16 slot?

#1 No you cannot put a PCI card in a PCI-E slot.  They are physically different
#2 Your motherboard comes with 2 PCI slots
#3 Why are you using an ethernet/NIC card?  The motherboard has it built in.

The PCI  will physically fit into the express slot, but not vice versa.   But it still will not work.

Not all of them do.  Especially when you start bare bones.  And ESPECIALLY gigabit cards.






Fencer, if you want (or still can),  exchange the video or nic card for a PCI Express  Or even the sound for that matter

Go for the new NIC card, then.

You can get a gigabit (not that your router OR ISP is that fast, yet) PCI Express one.

Or just use USB headphones for now.  We need you ready for tomorrow.     ;)

Ok, I found PCI Express sound cards but they are x1.. will those work in X8 or X16 slots?

The "NIC" card is the Ethernet card (sorry)


P.S. 

Can't you drop the Video card down a slot so it doesn't hog up (or cover) the empty slot?

Yeah I knew that, I meant where as in "what model etc".

Ok the local Frys store has a D-link 1.0GB NIC card for $49.00, I will hobble in and grab it on the way home.  I can reuse my sound card then.  REALLY wish I had not thrown away the box for the PCI NIC card I bought 3 weeks ago...  :cry

I "should" but up completely tonight.  Everything else posted, I kept having a SM BUS CONTROLLER hardware thing pop up and difficulties installing the PCI NIC card.. BUT I figured out I never loaded the Motherboard's drivers.. d'oh.  :O :huh :rofl

No I cannot.  It covers no matter what I do, and I cannot use the lowest X16 slot as it is on top of my power supply and cuts off the power cord opening.. This thing is packed tighter than a clown car.

Not good for thermal issues.
