« on: September 18, 2008, 03:19:30 PM »
Well last night I have been flying the updated IL2 with the 37mm cannons and man those things are brutal against enemy tanks. I have to say I think the updated IL2 will put a end to gv missions.

Manned ack is HE. Isn't the IL2 AP?

not shure if the manned ack is HE or AP

from the training page, what one is it? the last one?

37mm M4                                      17.1

37mm HE Ostwind / 37mm AP          15.6

Field gun is the 37mm HE I think, and the Il2's guns I know are the NS37. However, that is most likely the damage that the NS37 in the Yak9T does, which fires HE shells not AP.

I think the M8 also has a 37mm gun, doesn't it? Maybe that's the really powerful listing there?

37mm HE                                       31.2

That would be the M8's 37mm HE round.  The M8's 37mm HE round is better 1v1 for damaging OBJ than the M8's 37mm AP or the Eastwind's 37mm.  The thing about the Eastwind is that it fires at a much higher rate and it carries 20 times the ammo than that of a M8.   :)

I found some pretty cool photos of the IL-2 Type 3 armed with the NS-37 cannons.

This photo gives an outstanding view of the guns:

And here is a side view of them:

And here is an amazing photo that compares the size of the different shells used by the Soviet Air Force during WWII.   You can really appreciate here the increase in size between the new 37mm rounds and the 23mm round option.   No wonder the 37mms are devasting tanks so much better.

Judging how effective the NS37 (AH Il2 m3)is  agin ground ack I think it is 37 x 195 AP. Which according to AGW it was.

just as the 23mm YVA carried API

Interestingly there is no reason that a Yak9T should not carry AP instead of the current HE  (as a load out option?). Infact generically the 37 x 195  seems to have been more common as an AP round.

I recall somebody (Tony Williams?) claimed that the Yak-9T always carried HE rounds as it was intended for air-to-air combat.

Yes, the Yak-9T carried HE, the Il-2 AP. The NS-37 was easily the best of the airborne anti-tank guns in this calibre to see service, as the gun was slim, light, fast-firing and belt-fed, as well as firing the most powerful ammo. The German 30mm and 37mm guns did, however, have the advantage of using tungsten-cored projectiles.

The pic below from my web article on tankbusters shows the relative sizes of the main AP rounds.

WOW, this is the first photo that I have ever seen where the 50 BMG looks so very tiny.

Normally in cartridge comparison photos, the 50 BMG is the top dog, like it is here:
