Explosions
« on: September 19, 2008, 11:37:52 AM »
well guys im not really 1 for complaining about this game because i like it a lot, but i would love to see better explosions. when you shoot down an enemy plane and blow it up you see a small ball of fire and then all disapears. i would like to see the plane explode into multiple burning peices with bright huge fire ball.

ocasionally planes do give off a exposion trail of black smoke but i would like more of this.

any way what does the rest of you guys think :rock

My first recommendation to you is change your sounds.

"Huh?"
You probably don't realize, but the default sounds this game comes with are pretty weak. You especially want to change the default explosion sound. It sounds like a bug hitting a screen door. Members of the community have created a far more immersive sound experience. Do a search for Mitsu's, Twinboom's, or Ranger's sounds. They are downloadable with installation instructions. I recommend mixing your favorite sounds from all.

Use Mitsu's explosion sound.

The game reads Aces High II/Sounds/Explode4.wav as the sound it plays when a plane explodes in flight. Here is Mitsu's explode4

http://www.mediafire.com/?uyi0yc2tlxe

Download that file, and replace your default explosion sound. It SHOULD be explode4.wav, but I've installed so many soundpacks that maybe my directory is slightly off. In any case, browse through your explosion sounds until you find the familiar one, and replace it with Mitsu's.

While more visual explosions would be nice, I doubt it's going to happen. This is the next best thing.

I agree that adding a sound pack does improve the reality aspect.

I know what the OP means, some of the explosion animations are kind of... well, boring (bombs being dropped are very choppy animations as well).  However, there are some very cool aircraft explosions I've seen, as he stated.  Every once-in-a-while, an aircraft will blow up and burning debris will fall from the wreckage.  It would be cool if burning debris fell from exploded aircraft more often (if not every time), would add that extra bit to the visual aspect of the game. :aok

I'd definitely enjoy seeing more when something explodes. Perhaps a 12-30 second animation for bombs which includes fire, dirt flying, smoke, and perhaps the occasional remains from a sheep flying through the air ramming a plane destroying it.

As for plane explosions. I'd enjoy seeing perhaps a 12 second animation including the initial explosion, the large ball of fire afterward, and the small bits of debris aflame headed for the deck.

People are afraid it would hurt the frame rate, but croduh tested his explosions and said it did not affect the frame rate one bit.

The only time I've had FR issues id when I brought a new video card and suddenly they dropped to sideshow like performance, turns out my CPU couldn't keep up with it, so I ended up upgrading everything.
