Luftwaffe Rockets
« on: February 01, 2001, 05:31:00 PM »
I understand the guns on the bombers having to be turned up for gameplay, I have no problem with that. But this makes the 109, and 190's rockets almost useless (unless tailgunners asleep   ) . The range of the rockets seems to be 750 yds before the timer causes it to explode, I've gotten kills at this range with them. This is well within the range of an average tailgunner. Would it be feasible to increase the range of the rockets another 500 yds? That way, they might be more useful. I don't think this will disrupt gameplay, as not too many fellas are interested in learning to aim them efficiently.

Also, weren't the rockets supposed to fire at a slight upward angle?

Thanks,
hb

Kill the bomber with your guns...save the rockets for the chutes that pop out of the bomber

I agree hblair. They were designed to be a stand-off weapon to break up the bomber formations outside the range of their defensive armament. Not much chance of that in AH.

At 300mph the rockets detonate 440 yards off your nose. I've yet to see anyone get that close to any buff from a dead-6 approach without getting blown into confetti.

I remember reading some place that there range was 1000yrd. I could be wrong. If that is the case it would help a bunch.

I am in agreement with Hblair here, the rockets in reality would be fired from outside the bombers defensive range.  I suggest setting the timing such that a launch at 300mph from 1.5k yrds is optimum.

<punt> Anyone have some data on these? I've searched and can't find it. I've found the speed (1200km/h) and the payload (41kg), but can't find a range or timing.

Ok, a squadmate dug this data up.

"...Firing distance up to 1200 m. The rocket engine consisting of 18,4 kg Diglykol-Feststoff (none-liquid), warhead was about 40,8 kg powder..."
"The rocket tube with three guiding rails inside had a length of 130 cm. The rocket was fired by pressing the bomb release button on the stick."

Will keep searching for more.

<punt> Also, are we going to get R4M rockets for the 190F-8? They were used for anti-armor and A2A (2 different warheads)

Here's what I wanna see:

1.  About 1300 yard range in a stern chase before they explode.

2.  The elevation of the rockets when launched should be such that you can see the target.  Ideally you should be able to center the bomber in the bombsight at say 1200 yards (in level flight directly behind the bomber) and have a good chance of a hit.

they are useless

with a 40 kg warhead they should do some damage

Skurj I agree, think these rockets weren't actually designed to be fired at individual bombers although I guess you could. I agree, I think they were intended to brake up bomber formations. They were fired into a combat box to brake it up from what I understand. hblair on wing mounts they were fired at a slight upward angle and lobbed into the formation. There were mounts for some planes with upward firing rockets but I'm not sure if they were the same type.
