Vid issues

Alright, ive got two problems, the first is minor, the second, rather more important.

Firstly, my Control i does not work in AH. I usually left my FR indicator on, until one day, when I tried to turn it off, I couldn't. I spend months trying to turn it off with no luck. One day when I logged on, it just wasn't on anymore! Well, it turned out I wanted to check my FR breifly. So I tried to turn it back on, and it wouldn't come on! Same thing, about a month without it. Then one day, when I logged in, it was there! Once more it has turned itself off, and I cannot for the life of me figure out what makes it come and go.

Secondly, my NVIDIA control panel is not working. I can control the very BASIC sliders, I can select to have the program chose settings for itself, or I can slide between quality and performance. But anytime I try to access the advanced settings and select options one by one, the window freezes.

Anyone have any ideas what I can do about this?

edit: I have uninstalled and reinstalled AH several times and nothing has changed.

If the NVidia control panel is acting that badly, your computer has more problems than just with Aces High II.  Sounds like a virus, maybe malware or spyware.

If that doesn't do it, try uninstalling your video card (drivers too) and re-installing it. That should repair the control utility.

No viruses, I run a daily scan of EVERYTHING, as well as once a week de-fragging the HD. I fixed the NVIDIA problem though. I updated my vista to Service Pack 1 which apparently had an NVIDIA update bundled in with it and that problem went away. I still cannot use Control i though.

Are you using drivers you got from the Nvidia website or from the video card manufacturer?

Are they not the same?

Im getting them from the NVIDIA website though, and all is running smoothly now.

The Control i issue is still annoying the hell out me though. Its such a simple thing, yet it doesnt work!

You should have said Vista.  NVidia has had a terrible time with thier Vista drivers.

One possible cure is to clean all the NVidia drivers from your system and install the latest drivers from the card manufacturer. VIsta might work with the generic Nvidia drivers but if you can find the latest drivers from the card manufacturer and they are WHQL you will have a better time with them.

Isn't Nvidia the card manufacturor though? So will this fix Control i?

No the GPU chip is made by Nvidia I would think but the card is made by ASUS BFG eVGA PNY XFX etc...

I dont know for sure it will fix the problem.I can only tell you that the generic drivers are 98% of the issues with Vista blue screens and lower performance problems (probably more like 99.9%). Also the problem will get worse if you dont do a thorough cleaning. The way Vista stores/uses older dlls by 'cubby holes' in the \Winsxs folder (for example) causes slow down issues the more older programs and drivers you install (if I correctly understand how it works). You dont want to go tooling through there yourself (trust that!) so thats why I recommended the driver cleaner program.

Just like all windows versions it is better that you use windows for single purposes. If you program (for instance) dont install a bunch of games and if you game dont install a bunch of programming tools because if you do the OS will slow things down to a crawl.

The absolute worst thing you can do with Vista (any version) is try to use it for multiple purposes and then come along and start installing a bunch of different drivers trying to find the best one (without completely removing the previous versions) especially if those drivers are from Nvidia or Creative.

The only one I know of is: http://drivercleaner.net/

Its about $10 but I guess you could search for a free one. I know that one works.

EDIT: Just Thursday eVGA released new drivers for the 8800 for XP and Vista. If you have an eVGA card you could use those (I dont know yet if they are WHQL). The procedure to change drivers is covered in the documentation for Driver Cleaner (Help) but in simplest form you uninstall the driver first and then run the cleaner (as Administrator).

I dont which card i have, it came with the computer. All I know is its an NVIDIA GeForce 6150LE

You dont have an actual card I think its an integrated setup. In that case the Nvidia drivers are probably all you can get. You want to uninstall the drivers do a cleanup and then reinstall the latest version from Nvidia.

So, its integrated? Even though it says NVIDIA GeForce 6150? Hmm... Im even more clueless than I thought about computers :(
